IS THERE ANYTHING MORE PLEASURABLE TO THE MIND THAN UNSULLIED PAPER? THE STUDIOUS COMPARISONS AND SELECTION OF “STOCK” IN TEXTURES AND COLORS OF CARDS AND PAPER?

Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959)

What Happened?!?! Where did it go?!?!
Where did the year go and how is it November??? AIA members, you have been so busy this year. It makes me happy to hear most of you have a back log of projects. Yet, you still managed to attend AIA Chapter meetings, design lectures, exhibits and site visits. We had a record attendance this year with sold out meetings!

We have started the planning for 2018 too. We are starting the year off with “It’s all About WOOD,” designing with wood and WOOD tradeshow. Vendors that are wood related (Simpson Strong Tie, Hoover Fire Treated Wood, Weyerhaeuser and more TBA) will be on site for you to learn more about these products. In February, we will visit Alabama Sawyer and hear from Cliff Spencer about milling wood that would have ended up in landfills.

Are you into Lego’s??? We will partner with the ACFA for a Lego – Design Build your Home exhibit in March/April. This exhibit will focus on residential architecture.

And I guess I need to finish 2017 before I get you all jazzed about 2018. We are giving you a platform for your creative talents with Art X Architects and Santa’s Stocking Stuffer Pop Up Shop – all at the ACFA!! More info in the newsletter, keep reading!

Peace & AIA Love,
Rhea Williams,
Executive Director AIA Birmingham & Alabama Center for Architecture

P.S. I bought this great book at a museum store the ARCHITECT says Quotes, Quips, and Words of Wisdom. Look for the quote each month!______

David Baker Lecture

What an inspiring lecture! On September 13th, the ACFA welcomed David Baker, FAIA of David Baker Architects, to Iron City to give a SOLD OUT lecture entitled, “9 Ways to Build Community through Urban Design.” From Make Big Moves to Art for ALL, each of his principles made you think about the smallest thing to make a project more successful. “David Baker’s creativity and passion for building community are quite compelling. I was impressed by his ability to illustrate these 9 concepts in such an approachable way for both design professionals and the general public.   Most inspiring to me were the beautiful images of his firm’s completed projects that accomplish the stated goals with very modest budgets,” stated David Blackmon, AIA, ACFA 2017 President.

The Get Personal examples of creating a personal space outside your apartment entrance in the hallway were all such easy design elements that can be added to any multifamily project. We would like to extend a special thanks to our event sponsor, Dix.Hite + Partners for making this meeting possible and to everyone who attended! You can visit David Baker’s website here as well as our sponsor Dix Hite + Partners here!

Welcome, Sarah Godbee, to Karma Management Inc.!

Sarah Godbee, born in Montgomery, moved to Birmingham in 2012 to pursue an education from UAB. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in public relations with a minor in international studies in May. While in school, she participated in UAB’s Public Relations Student Society of America, and she won a Medallion Award & two Awards of Excellence. Sarah discovered her passion for social media through an internship at the UAB Web Communications Department, where she managed several student accounts and consistently gauged the interest of the student body.

When she isn’t working, Sarah’s favorite pastimes include attending plentiful art and music events, spontaneous cooking, hiking, films, photography, traveling to new cities, and escaping to the beach when the opportunity arises. If she had to live by one quote, it would be: “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.” – Maya Angelou

We are excited to welcome Sarah to Karma Management! Many of you have already met Sarah, either at Design Awards, a chapter meeting or when you’ve stopped by the ACFA. Send her a message at sarah@karmamanagementinc.com to welcome her!______

Hurricane Harvey Update from AIA National

Many of our members affected by Hurricane Harvey have begun the initial stages of recovery.  The growth of mold and mildew are of great concern for healthy occupancy.

  • AIA is hosting daily support calls with affected components and members. These discussions have centered on the following issues:
    • Chain of command/the role of FEMA.
    • Obtaining formal requests from jurisdictions to perform safety assessments.
    • Volunteer training and credentialing requirements.
    • Communication management for member firms and members.
  • AIA trained TSA members this week in its “emergency” version of the Safety Assessment Program so that they may perform building safety assessments once waters recede, and shelter for volunteers is identified.
  • AIA is working with its counterparts at the federal level to coordinate and offer support.
    • AIA enabled volunteering in Texas through a partnership with ICC/BOAT.
    • FEMA has requested AIA members to join its Mitigation Assessment Teams.

Volunteer

For those members unaffected, if you have office equipment, furniture, office supplies, etc., to share with your fellow design professionals in the areas impacted by Harvey, the Texas Society of Architects is organizing shipments at an appropriate time.  Please contact harvey@texasarchitects.org.

All trained SAP members (ATC-45/CAL-EMA):  At this time, Texas is not mobilized to accept assistance from out-of-state architects.

September 15th: Open House at the ACFA/AIA Office

Come check out two way cool exhibits.

Open House Hours
Friday, September 15
8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

We will have coffee from 8:30 – 10:00.

Bring your lunch and we will have sodas until 1:30. You can sit at the bar or in the conference room. Make it a Friday Firm Field Trip!

The National AIA EP exhibit has traveled to Birmingham and will be on exhibit through September. The young professional minds have thought of solutions to proposing plans to:

  • Equalize and activate water spaces along the Tonghui River in Bejing.
  • Designing transition housing for homeless using over passes. Birmingham needs to take a close look at this with these TALL flyovers we have under construction.
  • A Park that creates a pedestrian friendly and inviting streetscape.
  • Growing Canopies is a comprehensive proposal for improvements to holistic health in Ghana.
  • And MORE!

Architects of all ages are all the same – PROBLEM SOLVERS! Where would we be without architects???!!! You make the world a better place.

Looking for art? Come check out Turner McLemore’s Faux-Realism exhibit and installation. Mini art and if you need an Anti–Depressant, we have them too. ______

August 2017 News

Joe · July 31, 2017 ·

Architects – YOU are AWESOME!!

You guys make me so PROUD and you should be too! And you know why if you attended the July ACFA/AIA Awards luncheon. Thru the ACFA golf tournament and member firms YOU awarded seven students with scholarships totaling $12,000. Seven students YOU directly influenced and are supporting in their 2017 – 2018 school year. The students and their parents got to experience what a great architecture community their son or daughter will be a part of when they graduate. AIA LOVE!

And to make you even PROUDER, YOU recognized our newly licensed architects. It is a long rough road to get licensed in architecture and expensive. We are so proud of our newly licensed architects. They set an example for the scholarship winners at the luncheon.

We will be promoting AIA membership and the ACFA over the next few months to show you other ways you are making a difference in the design community and to let you know of other ways you can get involved and make a difference.

Keep up the great work and keep on making a difference. You make me so PROUD.

Peace & PROUD,

Congratulations Architects!

All of you are winners in my book!  So much talent in AIA Birmingham, I would never want to be a juror for Birmingham. The DC jury had a difficult time selecting the honor and merit awards. They discussed for hours and then circled back around to make the final cut. We included the jury comments and hope you take the time to read them. The boards will be on exhibit next week at the Thomas Jefferson Gallery (there is a commercial shoot in the space this week, so they had to come down). We would like to schedule site visits to all the award winning projects, we are working thru how we will make that happen, owners have to agree and a few more moving parts. Stay tuned!

On another note….$$$$…. I know all of you are so busy right now and that is great news!  There are not enough architects to get all the work done this hot minute. If any of you are interested in extra work/side work (if your employer is okay with it) please contact me. I need a longer list of people interested in contract work. So much work and not enough of you talented architects! What a great problem.

Keep making a difference one design at a time!

PEACE,

Rhea Williams, Executive Director AIA Birmingham / Alabama Center for Architecture ______
