Happy September!
Have you registered for the September events yet? You need to today. First we have the David Baker lecture at Iron City (only 40 tickets left). AEC Mega Meeting presenting Cyber Security by FBI Agent Darren J. Mott. We have two exhibits in the ACFA gallery. We have the National AIA EP exhibit through September and the Faux-Realism exhibit by Turner McLemore. Oh! And a site visit to Nequette Architecture. These are events/experiences you cannot get at your desk in the office. There are benefits to being in the AIA family. We go the extra mile to bring great speakers, exhibits and tours that are interesting and qualify for CEUs for you – AIA MEMBERS!
Don’t forget to register ASAP for both events! We will NOT be able to take any walk ins for the David Baker lecture.
Peace & AIA Love,

Welcome, Sarah Godbee, to Karma Management Inc.!
Sarah Godbee, born in Montgomery, moved to Birmingham in 2012 to pursue an education from UAB. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in public relations with a minor in international studies in May. While in school, she participated in UAB’s Public Relations Student Society of America, and she won a Medallion Award & two Awards of Excellence. Sarah discovered her passion for social media through an internship at the UAB Web Communications Department, where she managed several student accounts and consistently gauged the interest of the student body.
When she isn’t working, Sarah’s favorite pastimes include attending plentiful art and music events, spontaneous cooking, hiking, films, photography, traveling to new cities, and escaping to the beach when the opportunity arises. If she had to live by one quote, it would be: “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.” – Maya Angelou
We are excited to welcome Sarah to Karma Management! Many of you have already met Sarah, either at Design Awards, a chapter meeting or when you’ve stopped by the ACFA. Send her a message at sarah@karmamanagementinc.com to welcome her!______
Hurricane Harvey Update from AIA National
Many of our members affected by Hurricane Harvey have begun the initial stages of recovery. The growth of mold and mildew are of great concern for healthy occupancy.
- AIA is hosting daily support calls with affected components and members. These discussions have centered on the following issues:
- Chain of command/the role of FEMA.
- Obtaining formal requests from jurisdictions to perform safety assessments.
- Volunteer training and credentialing requirements.
- Communication management for member firms and members.
- AIA trained TSA members this week in its “emergency” version of the Safety Assessment Program so that they may perform building safety assessments once waters recede, and shelter for volunteers is identified.
- AIA is working with its counterparts at the federal level to coordinate and offer support.
- AIA enabled volunteering in Texas through a partnership with ICC/BOAT.
- FEMA has requested AIA members to join its Mitigation Assessment Teams.
Volunteer
For those members unaffected, if you have office equipment, furniture, office supplies, etc., to share with your fellow design professionals in the areas impacted by Harvey, the Texas Society of Architects is organizing shipments at an appropriate time. Please contact harvey@texasarchitects.org.
All trained SAP members (ATC-45/CAL-EMA): At this time, Texas is not mobilized to accept assistance from out-of-state architects.
