February 2017 News

Joe · February 6, 2017 ·

Happy  Month!

Are you feeling the AIA love yet? You should be feeling it, we are sharing it and promoting architects every chance we get. You have responded to our EVERY Building has an ARCHITECT campaign. AIA members have emailed us 4 articles that did NOT mention the architect. We mailed the above postcard with a nice note asking them to name the architect in articles. Usually they use a rendering that an architect did and never give you credit.  WHY? WHY? WHY?? I don’t understand. Yes, I realize I am preaching to the choir. We will keep mailing those postcards, keep sending us the article and if possible include the architect for the project.

We continue to educate and spread the architect love thru the Alabama Center for Architecture community outreach programs too. dreamARCHITECTURE just held the teacher workshop and N2ARCHITECTURE has presented to more than 1300 students since October 2016.  We could use some help sharing the ARCHITECTURE, want to help us?  Email me at aiabirm@aiabham.org.

Hope to see you on Feb. 22nd for the chapter meeting. You can have my orange roll if you come to the meeting.  🙂

Peace and AIA Love,

Rhea Williams, Executive Director AIA Birmingham & Alabama Center for Architecture ______

MINI DESIGN WEEK EVENT

Living Small Lecture & Exhibit Opening
Thursday, March 9

Lecture at 11:30 at Iron City ($20 to attend) – 1 HSW
Housing is one of the most pressing challenges our country faces as more people move into cities and adopt an urban lifestyle. LIVING SMALL endeavors to instigate a thoughtful conversation about how to house the growing urban population while retaining the character and quality of life in our cities.

Architect Garrett Reynolds, AIA, of Bohlin Cywinski Jackson in Seattle, will present a lecture about the design of micro living spaces from his research in New York City, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Seoul, and Tokyo. The discussion seeks to provide a dialogue between his research and the changing housing climate in Seattle, Birmingham, and around the world.

Exhibit Opening 5:30-7:30 at the ACFA

The intent of Birmingham’s Living Small exhibition is to explore what urban living means in Birmingham as people return to the city core. The exhibit will add local projects and development typologies to the original Living Small exhibition to catalyze a dialogue about potential opportunities and best practices for Birmingham as it rediscovers its historic density.

There will be an open house during the opening reception in one of the Tiny Homes designed by Jeff Dungan in the lot behind the ACFA office.

Exhibit sponsored by Alagasco, Birmingham Realtors, Clayton Homes and American Printing.______

Congratulations to Ty Cole, AIA on his induction into the Alabama Construction Hall of Fame!

January Chapter Meeting Recap: Security & Design

On Tuesday, January 17th, AIA Birmingham welcomed Patrick Gilbert, AIA of Gresham, Smith and Partners Nashville office to our monthly chapter meeting. Gilbert discussed practical ways architects should think holistically about their designs to ensure safety and protection for its users, such as designing to avoid “bully corners,” using the 3-7 rule to ensure users have a clear view 3′ off the ground to 7′ off the ground and harnessing creative lighting solutions as a crime deterrent. Thank you to Mr. Gilbert for speaking to our architects!

Tuskegee Career Focus – Feb. 13-17

Because the AIAS will be partnering with the Tuskegee University Construction Science Department, it is inviting all architectural firms, construction and construction-related companies, and other design and building-related firms to participate, as well as, graduate schools and architecture/construction professional organizations. This year’s AIAS and BRICKS Career Focus event takes place during the week of February 13th through February 17th, 2017.

2017 Presidents Letter

Happy New Year! This is the time of year when we renew, refresh and prepare for the coming year’s goals in the form of resolutions.  Do you have a few of your own in mind?  I would like to take this opportunity to share some resolutions for all of us to consider in 2017 to help build a stronger AIA Birmingham.

Let’s BE PRESENT. Be present in person by attending chapter meetings, award ceremonies, and other chapter events.  There are so many wonderful opportunities within AIA to be involved in: continuing education programs, design awards, government affairs, lecture series, just to name a few. AIA also supports the Alabama Center for Architecture (ACFA) and programs such as N2Architecture and Dream Architecture. These programs have become very successful and are a joy to be involved with. It always seems like the kids at these programs teach me more than I teach them! Let’s also be present in mind by sharing our ideas and thoughts to the organization.  How can AIA serve you?  What events do you want to see?

Let’s BE SUPPORTIVE.  Part of the mission of the AIA is to “advocate for the value of architecture and give architects the resources they need to do their best work”. I believe that applies to our membership as well.  We must advocate for the value of architecture.  We would never have stayed up all night to finish a project if we did not think it had value!  Let’s resolve to build one another up and in turn build up the profession that we love.  This year we will be kicking off an architecture awareness campaign. Every book has an author, every dress has a designer, and every BUILDING has an Architect.  AIA will send a postcard (above) to all media that mentions a building, but does not list the Architect. We are PROMOTING our PROFESSION. Email aiabirm@aiabham.org when you read an article that does NOT include the Architect on a project (please include the Architect in the email). The postcard with the Architect’s information will be mailed to the publisher.

Let’s BE UNITED. We’ve all heard the proverb “it takes a village to raise a child.” This is certainly true with my family and I believe it is true in our profession. It takes ALL of us working as a united voice to promote the value of an Architect.

Last year was a wonderful year for the chapter.  We saw an increase in membership, social media sponsorship and community visibility.  Every one of the chapter meetings was sold out!   I am excited and grateful to be the 2017 Chapter President and will work to carry this momentum into 2017!

Best wishes for happy New Year,

Lauren W. Gwaltney, AIA

Today, society continues to debate the role that architecture should play when it comes to security. There’s an abundance of abysmal examples: buildings buttressed by jersey walls, metal spikes, barbed wire, bars, and berms or surrounded by a phalanx of security; defensive architecture designed to function like a fortress or retrofitted with tacked-on deterrents. How, then, should architects design safe spaces that are also beautiful and humane? This presentation will explore how architects can move beyond the bunker and create buildings abroad that are capable of keeping people inspired as well as safe. Read more: http://www.architectmagazine.com/aia-architect/aiafeature/designing-for-security_o

Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2017, GS&P opened its first office outside of Nashville in Birmingham more than 35 years ago. ______

Design Awards 2017 – Get your Projects Ready!

FYI– We are moving up our Design Awards call for entries process so we can host our jury in Washington DC on March 8. The Awards Gala will still be in June.

Be on the lookout for an email with the Call for Entries in the coming weeks! Email Rhea or Kathryn with any questions. ______

Renovation Projects Needed – Forest Park – Norwood – Avondale

We’re looking for a single family residential house in the neighborhoods immediately surrounding downtown – such as Forest Park, Norwood, Avondale, etc – which was built in the early or mid-20th Century and has received a contemporary renovation in the last few years. It should be a renovation of the existing building, and not have an addition which substantially alters the size of the building.

These projects will be considered for the upcoming LIVING SMALL exhibit.

Email aiabirm@aiabham.org if you have a project that fits this description! ______

Holiday Party Recap

On Thursday, Dec. 1st, we celebrated a wonderful 2016 with our annual Holiday Party at the Alabama Center for Architecture! AIA members enjoyed yummy food from Savoie Catering, beer from Cahaba Brewing Company and a specially curated exhibit, Art X Architects (featuring work by bDot, Jonathan Meadows, Jared Fulton and Edward Griffith). We also had our holiday shop open to sell the ACFA’s limited edition holiday ornaments and prints. Special thanks to Alagasco for sponsoring this fun event! See photos from the event here.  ______

Government Affairs Updates

Form Based Zoning & Design Guideline Changes

If you practice in the City of Birmingham, you will want to look at the City’s proposed form-based zoning and design guideline changes that will have a dramatic impact on parts of the downtown core and other areas such as Avondale. The goal of the new zoning code is to promote pedestrian friendly districts and mixed used occupancies, however, the Design Guidelines are strongly biased toward a late 19th/early 20th century aesthetic and materials.

The City is accepting comments on these draft documents through the end of January and AIA Birmingham is compiling a response from comments and suggestions provided by its members. We need your participation. If you have questions or are willing to review documents, please contact Richard Simonton (richard@ssbarch.com). You can access the proposed zoning and design guideline overlay documents through this dropbox link: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/h4n3k3azql1leq5/AABYDzXH1q–V5v32-0lZrGba?dl=0

One architect’s powerful impact

Architects are passionate about their profession and its future. But translating that passion into effective legislative advocacy does not come easily for everyone. That quandary is exactly what inspired AIA Birmingham’s Government Affairs Liasion Bruce Herrington, AIA, to create a powerful new tool to engage architects. With the help of AIA Advocacy staff, Herrington created Advocacy 101 – The Responsibilities and Opportunities of Government Advocacy.

This engaging new resource “defines advocacy and describes why AIA members should and can be active in government advocacy.” A peer-to-peer resource, the PowerPoint presentation is designed to be personalized and presented by members, to members.  Herrington designed the PowerPoint so that “Advocacy 101 offers numerous opportunities for a presenter to offer topics for which architects can actively advocate and present stories from his or her experience.” Click here to read more about the program. Thank you to Bruce Herrington for developing this resource! ______

Recap: Site Visit to Pizitz Food Hall

On Thursday, December 8th the AIA Birmingham Emerging Professionals toured the Pizitz Food Hall. Will Buie of Appleseed Workshop led the tour. Appleseed and Golden Construction are building out 11 of 19 food stalls and 2 of 3 restaurants in the food hall, which is the first of its kind in Birmingham. Our EPs learned about the complicated mechanical systems required to accommodate so many full kitchens in one small area, the historical preservation requirements, and the logistics puzzle the architect and contractors are working with daily to please both inspectors and their clients (just imagine having 11 clients at once on one project!) Thanks to Appleseed Workshop and Golden Construction for allowing us the opportunity to tour this wonderful space! The soft opening is scheduled for mid-January, so be sure to visit this incredible new addition to the Birmingham food scene. Click here to see more photos! ______

Gobble Gobble Architects,

THANKS GIVING. THANKSgiving. ThanksGIVING. Notice anything about this holiday? The words in THANKSGIVING. THANKS, we should all give thanks for what we have; jobs, health, friends, family, loved ones, our four legged family members, freedom, education, food, clothing, and shelter….

GIVING, if you have more than you need, give it to someone who does need it. Giving – share what you are thankful for with others. Give thanks. It is better to give than receive. I love the feeling when you give something to someone who needs it, it makes you feel good inside. Share that feeling.

I am thankful for each one of you. You make a difference every day. Help AIA Birmingham keep making a difference, get involved in our community outreach programs. We have programs for kindergarten thru high school. Call or email me to get involved.

Have a THANKFUL November.
Peace and THANKSgiving,

In 1998 Your Town Alabama (YTA), was founded by a group of volunteers from across Alabama and from both the public and private sectors. They represented design education, economic development, historic preservation and resource preservation. Our vision was to expose community decision makers to asset-based planning techniques, focusing on identifying ‘what is right’ within their community and building on these unique community assets. However, the costs for the workshop are never fully covered by the registration fees. We need assistance in providing this valuable experience. Click here to view more. ______

The goal of this fundraiser (of course besides raise money) is to promote awareness of our landmarks and encourage people to visit them, support and promote local artist, and promote the architectural/design profession.

Joey Longoria painted Sloss Furnace. He graduated from Auburn University’s School of Architecture in 1996 and credits a summer abroad trip to Norway in 1995 and a painting seminar that same year with renowned watercolor artist David Braly for developing a true love of painting and defining the techniques and process that he uses to create art. He typically uses acrylic paint mixed with a heavy body gel medium, which gives the paint a prolonged drying time and a texture that allows him to create relief on the canvas. See more of his work at www.archibaldlongoria.com.

Adrienne Retief is an architect and teaches watercolor workshops. Adrienne is a practicing architect, architectural illustrator and watercolor painter from South Africa of French Huguenot descent. She loves travelling and sketching, and she lives in Birmingham, Alabama. www.adrienneretief.com

Jane Reed Ross, ASLA, painted Rotary Trail and was also the landscape architect for the project.  “Rotary Trail in the Magic City” depicts changing times in an evolving Birmingham with all people working together to create an exciting quality of life. To illustrate this point, Jane paints Brittany Howard of “Alabama Shakes” leading her band across the trail a’ la The Beatles’ iconic crossing Abby Road. http://www.janereedrossla.com/

Rebecca Whitlow, AIA, painted Railroad Park. Art inspired her to pursue a career of creating in a spacial and structural sense. She received dual degrees in architecture and interior architecture from Auburn University, and honed her watercolor skills while studying abroad in Rome, Italy. She is the founder and owner of Revolutionary Architecture. www.revoarchitecture.com

Recap: Mega Meeting 2016

megaOn Tuesday, September 19th about 200 leaders in the architecture, engineering and construction industries met at Regions Field for a tradeshow and lecture. Our AWESOME engaging speaker Meagan Johnson spoke about the generational differences in the workplace and gave us some practical ways to overcome these differences. We learned that generations aren’t so different at all. What generation is lazy, unmotivated, entitled and defiant? Nope, not just millennials – the same things were said about Baby Boomers in the 1960s! Learning how to see similarities between the generations can help us all work better together.

Special thank you to the University of Alabama Construction Administration Division for sponsoring the event, as well as to LBYD and Robins & Morton for the break and meal sponsorships, respectively.. And of course thanks to our TWENTY-TWO exhibitors for their support…. See you in 2017!!

Recap: Artery Bike Tour at the Alabama Center for Architecture, featuring the Top 38 Birmingham Architecture Projects and an exhibit by Jonathan Meadows, AIAj-meadows-exhibit-1

On Saturday, September 24th, the ACFA participated in the first ever Artery Bike Tour, a bikeable tour of art around the city. We had our Top 38 Birmingham Architecture Projects (Design Awards) exhibit in the space, as well as a Walk Through an Architect’s Sketchbook by Jonathan Meadows, AIA.

Artist’s Statement: “A site-specific installation created for the Alabama Center for Architecture, “A Walk Through an Architect’s Sketchbook” is a display of the Architect’s thought process through sketching. As a designer, I sketch not to create artwork, but rather as an extension of trying to see and understand the environment around me. By making marks on paper, I inscribe the moment in my mind, for future recall and reflection.

The installation is a digital recreation of my own illustrations, sketched out in massive scale on translucent sheets suspended within the space. Beginning with construction lines the drawing is gradually built, illustrating the focus first on overall proportion and composition, then on detail, and finally color and shadow as watercolors are applied. The installation creates a layered space through zones of transparency and opacity, and the central occupiable space is immersive, with activity occurring all around the viewer.”

Roll Tide Architects,

JUST KIDDING! The University of Alabama Construction Administration Division is sponsoring the AEC Mega Meeting, and I had to give them a shout out, plus it got your attention. Now, I am going to get all these hate emails the rest of the day! Heavy sigh…………

So hard to believe it is September and football season. I feel like we were just hosting the music and architecture series and that was in January! Our meetings have been SOLD OUT every month this year, I know… it is because Bill Segrest is president. LOL

This month our chapter meeting is the AEC MEGA MEETING. This is the third year to host it, only a handful of architects have attended this event, try to make a special effort to attend this year. The speaker is so funny and knows her generations. All of us know or have experienced the challenges of cross generations working together on projects. It can be a little frustrating for everyone at times. We have to make it work, our future depends on it. We can each learn something valuable from each other if we would only be open to new ideas or old ideas. Office cultures are changing too, they are much more flexible, offer unusual perks/incentives for motivation that create a more positive productive work environment.

Invite everyone in the office, let’s get the whole office on the same page or at least in the same book! www.aecmegagroup.org

“Roughly 10,000 new millennials reach the legal drinking age every year (21 years old) and in five years, 40 percent of the workforce will be part of this generation. It is estimated that in 10 years, 75 percent of the workforce across the globe will call themselves the millennial generation.”  Meagan Johnson.

Peace,

Don’t miss the networking event of the year for the AEC industry. Join the AEC Mega Group for the third annual Mega Meeting, featuring generational humorist Meagan Johnson! Johnson will present “Zap the Gap: From Boomers to Linkster, How to Work with Multiple Generations.” We all talk about how we struggle working with multiple generations, Meagan will give us helpful hints on how each generation can learn from the next one creating a much more productive work environment. Each generation communicates differently and has a different view of what makes a positive work environment. Back in the day, we all used a landline and snail mail, then beepers to cell phones to emails and now it is easier and quicker to text. How do we all work together in an office and be productive? Register today to find out!

This event will also feature a tradeshow featuring professional vendors who can help you run your business more efficiently. Register today at: www.aecmegagroup.org.

Lights Camera Action!

augustmeeting

On Tuesday, August 16th, AIA Birmingham hosted Anthony Stabley, producer and set designer at Super Grande Films, at our monthly chapter meeting at Cahaba Brewing Company. Stabley discussed the movie he is currently filming in Birmingham, entitled “Let There Be Light,” focusing specifically on the locations he chose around Birmingham and why he chose those locations. It was hard to fathom the budget for the movie sets that would be torn down once the movie was completed. All that money and no architecture left intact, I saw architects flinching at this information. Movies are forever too though just in a different medium.

horizontal ace logoACE NEEDS MENTORS!!!

ACE Mentor Program of Alabama is looking for mentors to work with high school students. As more high school students learn about the AEC industry and opportunities with ACE, more mentors are needed to guide and direct the future of our industry. Over the past 2 years, ACE has received a record number of applications, and we can’t adequately mentor high school students without the help of professionals working in the construction industry.

As a mentor, you’ll attend ACE meetings every other Tuesday from 5:30-7:30. You’ll hear and discuss a presented topic, and then you’ll work on a project during the ACE session. It’s a great way to meet others working in the same environment, a great way to meet local high school students and help them decipher what the future holds, and most importantly, it’s a great way to give back to an industry that is so important to each of us. It’s also tons of fun.
