ALBM2016-designawards-1

Hello Fun Architects,
We had so much fun in January, can’t wait for February.  We have one more meeting for music and architecture, Seab Tuck, FAIA who designed the Country Music Hall of Fame will be presenting in February and then we move on to Historical Preservation.  As you all know the historical tax credit expired in 2015. They are taking applications until May 2016. As part of the series, we are hosting a historic tax credit project exhibit to use as a tool/resource to advocate to extend the historic tax credit.  There are 39 projects that received a state tax credit reservation and 13 on the waiting list.  Our goal is to have a project board for each project. Projects on the waiting list will be listed on a board.
The exhibit will travel across the state and will be in Mobile Al for the National Preservation Conference in late July.

2016 is dedicated to showing off your work, proving you are problem solvers, bring value to each project and advocating for the industry. What would the world look like without architects? We would be one big hot mess!

Please email me a list of your historical tax credit work if you want to participate in the exhibit.

Keep changing lives one design at a time! You are appreciated.

Peace & AIA Love,
Rhea Williams,
Executive Director, AIA Birmingham & Alabama Center for Architecture______

February Meeting – Symbolic Influences in Design with Seab Tuck, FAIA – 1 HSW

This talk will explore infusing symbolic references in the Design process. We will see how this defines projects by looking at historic examples, a few past projects of Tuck-Hinton Architects, and then more recent work such as the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and the convention center (Music City Center). The more recent examples suggest why and how specific music icons and imagery of Nashville imparted the final design of those projects.

Seab A. Tuck, and his business partner Kem Hinton, formed Tuck-Hinton Architects over 30 years ago. Their projects range from private residences to schools, from college buildings to civic structures, and from museums to commemorative parks. Such examples include the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, the Bicentennial Capitol Mall, the Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum, Public Square Park, Adventure Science Center, Headquarters for Warner Bros. Records, Country Music Association and Brooks Telecommunications. He more recently completed the Nashville Convention Center (Music City Center), and the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum Expansion, and multiple projects on the Lipscomb University Campus. Seab received his Bachelor of Architecture from Auburn University in 1975. In 1998, he was inducted into the prestigious College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects. In 2002 he received the Avalon Award for Creativity from Lipscomb University. Last year he was honored with The Tennessee Society of Architects Lifetime Achievement Award.

THANK YOU to our sponsors for this event– Williford Orman Construction and Williams Blackstock Architects! ______

poster-show

Music Poster Exhibit

Architects, hippies, graphic designers, musicians and music lovers all had one thing in common on January 14, 2016 – MUSIC POSTERS!!! The Alabama Center for Architecture hosted an opening reception for the Music Poster exhibit. Posters were from private collections. Click here for a list of the posters on exhibit.  It was so inspiring to see the eclectic crowd in the ACFA gallery space. The space was created to bring awareness to design and it is succeeding. As part of the exhibit, Davis Architects had a collage of music venue projects exhibited and we were able to subliminally educate a new audience.

Special thank you to Dave’s Pizza, Weld for Birmingham,Hunter’s Cleaners, Create Birmingham, Saturn Birmingham,Davis Architects and AIA Birmingham for partnering with us on this event! View more photos here: (on Facebook) (on our website). ______

panel-discussion2Dirty Socks???? Who Knew???

Our music venue panel discussion at Saturn Birmingham on Jan. 19th was phenomenal! We had 100+ attendees at our event, with an expert panel comprised of Neil Davis, AIA, Brian Teasley, Aaron Greene, Sean Price and of course our hip moderator from CCR (and SUBSTRATE RADIO) Jacklyn Loquidis-Hamric. We learned musicians have very dirty socks after a show/concert. Some musicians actually throw their socks out the window after a concert! SMELLY! Every musician at some point has had to play in a dirty filthy bar at some point while touring.

Hospitality goes a long way in the touring band world. Musicians are on the road for months and a smile at the door and let me help you goes a long way.

The panel discussed various elements of venue design, including safety, lighting, acoustics, amenities, hospitality and so much more. There was a lot of discussion about the stage: how much weight it can hold, leave the sides of the stage open for the touring bands lighting and other equipment, think about how they load in their equipment and breaking it down after a show.

Safety was addressed and all agreed if the current codes were enforced, many of the accidents would never happen or would not have been as tragic.

  • Here’s what some of our members had to say about the panel:
  • “They were each articulate in their own way, which made for a very good panel discussion.” – Emory Kirkwood
  • “I was expecting a typical “architecty” discussion but instead got to understand what the fans, owners and bands value in a facility. The panel was a perfect mix of humble talented artists and the result was refreshing.“– Louis Nequette, AIA
  • “Nice to hear professionals discussing what they are passionate about. Reminds me of what it means to love what you do.” Lissy Frese, AIA

After the panel discussion, Teasley gave us a tour of Saturn’s Green Room (artist hospitality suite) above the venue and coffee shop. The large loft had a full-size kitchen, built in bunk beds, washer/dryer (for those smelly socks) , bathrooms, a pool table, media room and even a mailbox for writing postcards home to friends and family. Definitely a draw to get touring bands to perform at Saturn and musicians TALK and word will spread quick about this ROCKING GREEN ROOM in Avondale AL. Click here to view photos of the event!______

AIA-Holiday-Invite-FINAL

header-newsletter-aia-november2015Hello Problem Solvers,
Thanksgiving, a time to be thankful. I am so thankful for architects. You create/design beautiful spaces for everyone (like our Design Award Honor winners above). You consider how each building will be used by the end user – people, us. We don’t think about the thought or time you put into each phase of the design, the liability, trying to create what the clients wants when they really do not know, much less take the time to thank you for your vision.

Thank you for designing all the spaces we live, work, play, worship, eat, drink, educational, hospitals, and so much more. You surround each of us with a beautiful safe place.

Thank you and I wish you and your family a HAPPY THANKSGIVING.

Peace and AIA love,

Hello Beautiful Smart Architects,

Fall is here and it brings so many annual events for you. The annual golf tournament, Design Week Birmingham and call for membership. I have heard, “What does AIA do for me? Why should I spend my hard earned money on AIA membership? I want to change the question…

What would happen to the architectural profession if there were NO AIA?

  • Who would have fought for the Good Samaritan Act?
  • Who would have fought to extend the Good Samaritan ACT from 30 days to 90 days?
  • Who would have kept pushing legislation to decrease the Statue of Limitations from 13 years to 7?
  • Who had your back when Tripp Pittman tried to pass Intellectual Property?
  • Who pushed the federal government on the Tax Credits (and to extend it)?
  • Who provides interesting site visits and tours for CEUs?
  • Who helps you find new hires? Who provides ARE study material? Who helped you find that perfect job?
  • Who is a resource for compensation reports? Billing Index?
  • Who markets and promotes the architectural profession?
  • Who provides members with these benefits? https://aiabham.org/services/member-benefits/

The American Institute of Architects – that’s WHO has your back!!!!
Consider the cost of membership $615 and divide by 12.
$51.25 per month to protect and promote your career.
Assoc. membership – $282 divided by 12.
$23.50 per month for ARE study materials, resource for job placement, and develop your career.

Cheers to renewing your AIA 2016 Membership and staying in the AIA family or in other cases,
WELCOME back to the AIA Family.

“Alabama: OPEN for Business”—2nd Annual AEC Group Mega Meetingmegameeting

mega-meetingMega Meeting this year was fabulous!! More than 20 exhibitors and 150 guests attended this year’s event at Regions Field. The panel, led by Milton Davis of BL Harbert, discussed current economic trends in Alabama. The panel consisted of: Brian Hilson, Birmingham Business Alliance; Brooks Kracke, North Alabama Industrial Development Association; Mike Horsley, Alabama Hospital Foundation; Ted Clem, Alabama Department of Commerce Business Development; and Greg Knighton, Economic Development Partnership of Alabama.

This panel of economic development leaders guided attendees through the forecasted growth in Alabama and the Southeast region, focusing specifically on the architecture, engineering and construction industries. Special thank you to all of our participating organizations and exhibitors – can’t wait until next year! (photos from the event) ______

Wine Down Wednesday Program – Recapwine-time

We had a great program for our first Wine Down Wednesday! Erik Kuehne of Wine Cellar Innovations gave a presentation on the design and construction requirements for wine storage, including room build out, the best suitable wood types to use, and climate control. Kuehne explained the environmental conditions required for the storage of wine and how they contribute to its proper aging. He also summarized the construction methods and techniques used in installing a wine cellar or room and evaluate refrigeration options. Thanks to European Kitchens of Alabama for hosting this informative presentation!

For our evening program, Scott Jones of Jones Is Thirsty shared his extensive knowledge of wines with us. This class took a deeper dive into the world of wine—from grape types to production to wine regions to the shapes of the bottles themselves. Who knew chardonnay and popcorn are delicious together?! And if you eat a hot pepper, do not drink red wine, it enhances the heat of the pepper, always follow up with a white wine to kill the heat. Our wine was provided generously by Stewart Lee at Structural Design Group, and our yummy hors d’oeuvres (duck confit quesadillas!) were made by Brian Mooney at Tre Luna Catering.

Thanks to everyone who attended these celebrations of AIA Birmingham’s 50th anniversary! To see more photos of the events, click here.______

2015 Birmingham Accolade Award winner, Tammy Cohen

AIA Birmingham is pleased to announce the winner of the 2015 Birmingham Accolade Award — Tammy Cohen, AIA, of Cohen Carnaggio Reynolds!

The Birmingham Accolade Award is the highest honor the Chapter can bestow on one of its members. The award, established in 2006, indicates peer recognition of exemplary achievement or service to the Chapter, the profession, or society.

Cohen’s architecture career spans 26 years in Birmingham, with 19 years at the helm of Cohen Carnaggio Reynolds, one of the city’s highly regarded design firms. Her diverse and skillful design work is undergirded by a strong dedication to the further invigoration of rich urban environments, first in downtown Birmingham, but also notably in Woodlawn, Homewood and beyond. Some of her most prominent projects include historic preservation work at City Federal, the campus of Integrated Medical Systems and the Third Avenue South Mixed-Use Development, which is currently under construction.

In addition to her prolific architectural and urban design work, Cohen has invested deeply in the Birmingham community through service, participation and leadership with groups such as Kiwanis Club, the Urban Land Institute, Birmingham’s Design Review Board and many others.

Congratulations to Tammy!! She received an original Brad Morton sculpture designed specifically for the Birmingham Accolade Award.______

Special thank you to our title sponsors for the 7th year in a row!
