February 2018 News
Change, Change, Change!!!
And yes you are supposed to sing it. We started the year off with a change of pace offering you 3 HSWs and a boutique tradeshow. Followed by Brian Roberson with Bdot presenting a design lecture on the similarities between the creative processes of music improvisation and design, and how they can be applied to architecture. He even gave a short saxophone concert. Inspiring! February brings even more interesting opportunities for continuing education. More info, but you have to keep reading the newsletter.
The Alabama Center for Architecture is hosting a LEGO Design Build exhibit that promotes architecture thru a fun exhibit and hand’s on LEGO room for the kids. Thru AIA and the ACFA we are educating the public about what you do and why they should hire an architect. You do have to participate for this to be successful. More info, but you have to read the newsletter.
Design Awards – Change, change, change…. No Categories – no limits or restrictions. If this is a complete failure, we won’t do it again, but let’s shake things up and see what happens. We want to see all those projects you never entered due to the limitation of the categories. More info, but you have to read the newsletter.
Other CHANGES are coming, but I better let you process the first quarter so we do not send you into shock. We have to keep it fresh just like your design work.
Keep making a difference one design at a time.
Peace,
Rhea Williams,
Executive Director AIA Birmingham & Alabama Center for Architecture______

January 2018 Newsletter
2018 President’s Letter
Is it me or does time go by faster the older we get? Ready or not, the New Year is upon us. Along with new challenges, 2018 promises new opportunities and new rewards. At AIA Birmingham, we are excited and optimistic about the upcoming year. If last year’s trend continues, we will see an even more robust building economy and increased billing. After years of stagnant growth, we welcome the upturn. With more work, all of us will be busier than ever.
As we focus on new projects, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. However, it’s important to not lose sight of the bigger picture. We must continue to support and advocate for our profession. Because our work is vital to the built environment, it’s important for decision makers to understand the value of architecture and design. As the saying goes, most decisions are made at the local level. With this in mind, AIA Birmingham will continue to meet with local leaders to promote the value of architects. I challenge all of our members to join us as we develop and foster relationships with city leaders. As we push to promote architecture to local governments, I ask members to look for ways they can advocate for the value of architecture in their community through joining design review boards, building committees, city councils, and any other positions where design decisions are made.
Looking to the future, AIA Birmingham, through our support of the Alabama Center for Architecture, promotes the value of architecture to kids and young adults through programs such as dreamArchitecture and N2Architecture. These programs have reached thousands of local students and will foster more students to pursue architecture majors and an appreciation in good design. Besides younger students, AIA Birmingham and the Alabama Center for Architecture continues to help college students through its scholarship awards program. As those of you who are involved with these programs know, it’s very rewarding to see how excited the students are to learn about architecture and design.
Along with local advocacy, we are very excited about our planned chapter meetings this year. We understand leaving the office is tough when you have a looming deadline. For this reason, we look to provide meetings with value and interest. Since most of our chapter meetings are sold out, make sure you are on the mailing list. If you don’t get notifications, please be sure to let us know.
Your membership in the AIA is very important and we are grateful for your continued support. Since our organization is strongest as a unified voice, we welcome your input and hope you will be an active participant in the chapter. Know we continually challenge ourselves to provide the greatest value for our members, and we strive to make each year better than the last.
I am excited for everything AIA Birmingham has planned this year and I am grateful for the opportunity to serve the chapter as President. Let’s make it an awesome year!
Best,
Ross McCain, AIA

made as the bill moved through the legislative process. This legislation moved through both chambers at
lightning speed, but thanks to the rapid response of AIA’s members across the country we are pleased to

What Happened?!?! Where did it go?!?!
Where did the year go and how is it November??? AIA members, you have been so busy this year. It makes me happy to hear most of you have a back log of projects. Yet, you still managed to attend AIA Chapter meetings, design lectures, exhibits and site visits. We had a record attendance this year with sold out meetings!
We have started the planning for 2018 too. We are starting the year off with “It’s all About WOOD,” designing with wood and WOOD tradeshow. Vendors that are wood related (Simpson Strong Tie, Hoover Fire Treated Wood, Weyerhaeuser and more TBA) will be on site for you to learn more about these products. In February, we will visit Alabama Sawyer and hear from Cliff Spencer about milling wood that would have ended up in landfills.
Are you into Lego’s??? We will partner with the ACFA for a Lego – Design Build your Home exhibit in March/April. This exhibit will focus on residential architecture.
And I guess I need to finish 2017 before I get you all jazzed about 2018. We are giving you a platform for your creative talents with Art X Architects and Santa’s Stocking Stuffer Pop Up Shop – all at the ACFA!! More info in the newsletter, keep reading!

David Baker Lecture
What an inspiring lecture! On September 13th, the ACFA welcomed David Baker, FAIA of David Baker Architects, to Iron City to give a SOLD OUT lecture entitled, “9 Ways to Build Community through Urban Design.” From Make Big Moves to Art for ALL, each of his principles made you think about the smallest thing to make a project more successful. “David Baker’s creativity and passion for building community are quite compelling. I was impressed by his ability to illustrate these 9 concepts in such an approachable way for both design professionals and the general public. Most inspiring to me were the beautiful images of his firm’s completed projects that accomplish the stated goals with very modest budgets,” stated David Blackmon, AIA, ACFA 2017 President.
The Get Personal examples of creating a personal space outside your apartment entrance in the hallway were all such easy design elements that can be added to any multifamily project. We would like to extend a special thanks to our event sponsor, Dix.Hite + Partners for making this meeting possible and to everyone who attended! You can visit David Baker’s website here as well as our sponsor Dix Hite + Partners here!

Emerging Professionals Site Visit to Nequette
We had a spectacular turn out at our September Emerging Professionals Site Visit to the soon to be new Nequette Architecture & Design headquarters! It was interesting to hear how the city of Birmingham was challenged by the new stair cases, fire walls and how Travis Burke had to walk them thru the steps to get the permit approved. Design – always a challenge! We can’t wait to visit the finished project. Thanks to everyone who participated and a special thank you Travis Burke for leading our tour!
