AIA Alabama Council & Alabama Center for Architecture Design Road Trip – Florence, Alabama Recap

WOW! What an unbelievable time we had at the 2018 AIA Alabama Design Road Trip. We started off the weekend with a City of Neighborhoods Charrette in partnership with Design Alabama & Florence Main Street. Later that afternoon, we shared the results of the charrette with all attendees at our Product Show. Saturday morning, we kicked things off bright and early with mimosas and a delicious breakfast at Alabama Chanin. We toured the facilities and heard a presentation from owner and designer, Natalie Chanin. Afterwards, we headed back downtown to the Walnut Street Historic District for a walking tour with local experts.

Saturday afternoon, we learned about the renovation and rebirthing of the building that now hosts the UNA School of Interior Design, as well as the renovation of Jackson Highway Recording Studio. Our evening was delightful – beginning with a musician panel at the beautiful Gunrunner Hotel in downtown Florence and ending with a jam session and yummy hors d’oeuvres.

Sunday morning was an unforgettable experience – Mimosas and Bloody Mary’s in Frank Lloyd Wright’s Rosenbaum House! We want to thank everyone who came and all the remarkable sponsors who helped make this event possible. Photos from the event. ______

April Chapter Meeting – Electric Buses Recap

Many thanks to the Birmingham Intermodal Facility for providing our space and to Alabama Power for hosting! Click here to view the photos. ______

Happy Spring Beautiful Architects!

Time. We all need it. We never have enough. Where did it go? This month I know where your time went, volunteering for AIA or the ACFA. You have been so generous volunteering your time. You answered our call for help in Calhoun County on very short notice and spring break week. Architects and structural engineers assessed approximately 686 structures in 8 days. You helped a city recover much quicker than if they had to do it alone, getting people back in their homes sooner than later. You saved lives by placing the red placards on the structures that were NOT SAFE for anyone to enter. We volunteered three hundred sixty eight hours.

The LEGO Design Build was a huge hit!!! Kids and parents both enjoyed the exhibit. We had 200 people attend the LEGO exhibit, from 20 cub scouts to 11 interior design students from University of North AL. It was an all age friendly exhibit, something for everyone. Architects (and spouses too), sponsors (thank you Jenna Zappa) and board members all volunteered a total of one hundred hours to help promote awareness about architecture.

And this month is our Florence Design Road Trip!!!!!!!! The Rosenbaum restoration photos are unreal and Don Lambert will share what it took to get the house restored and Al Rosenbaum will be on site to share what it was like growing up in a Frank Lloyd Wright house. I can’t even imagine. And the musician panel, I still can’t believe Ben Tanner, keyboard for the ALABAMA SHAKES is on our panel. Have you ever listened to R.L. Burnside? His nephew is Cedric Burnside is doing an acoustic jam session for us. He is so talented!!! And there is more. Hope to see you in Florence.

All of you make me so PROUD!!!!! Good people.

Peace & Love,
Rhea Williams, Executive Director AIA Birmingham & ACFA ______
