N2Architecture: Hayes K-8 School Career Day

Happy Thankful Month,

It was so good to see most of you at the Thank You Members and Sponsors luncheon.  I would like to thank each of you for your AIA membership and your valuable time.  Many of you volunteer and serve on committees in addition to paying your AIA dues.  All of you give to the profession in so many ways (other than AIA), serving on boards, committees, non-profits, zoning boards, design review and save time for your personal life. Whew!!!!  Be sure to take time to take a few deep breaths for yourself.  This is the burn out time of the year, try to take a minute for YOU. It can be as simple as walking outside at lunch, coffee without your phone, whatever is your happy place – make a point to visit that place. Find your zen before the holidays hit you, things will get really CRAZY.

Thank you for making a difference and caring.
Peace & AIA Love,
Rhea Williams, Executive Director AIA Birmingham
Alabama Center for Architecture

Intentional Design: Creating with the Community in Mind Recap

On October 5th, AIA Birmingham hosted Intentional Design: Creating with the Community in Mind, featuring conversations about redlining, revitalization efforts, and a community engagement panel.
“I had the great privilege to spend an afternoon in this wonderful, culturally rich, historically significant part of Birmingham. We called the series of conversations and panel discussions “Intentional Design” — however, today we didn’t design much, if anything at all. Instead, we chose to listen.”

“Thank you to all of the people who made this afternoon possible. Thank you to T. Marie King for assembling your amazing group of friends and peers to have these difficult conversations in front of us and allowing a room of architects glean wisdom. Thank you to AIA Birmingham for challenging its members to be part of this.”

“Thank you to all of today’s speakers and panelists for taking the time educate us; to communicate uncomfortable truths; to challenge us to take intentional steps each day in prioritizing people over pursuit of ‘progress.'”

Charlie Abram, AIA Emerging Professionals Director & Graduate Architect at Birchfield Penuel & Associates

Thank you to all who attended Intentional Design: Creating with the Community in Mind on October 5th. We hope everyone took something special from the panel discussions and will use it to better the city of Birmingham & Ensley.

Women in Architecture Exhibit Opening Recap

On October 5th, we gathered at the Alabama Center for Architecture to celebrate hardworking and persistent women in the architectural industry.

The exhibition highlighted local and national leaders, women who have a particular focus in the built environment, and the youngest generation of women in architecture. We will have a closing reception on November 16th as part of the Studio Arts District Collective Open House Block Party!

A very special thank you to Carlos Hernandez, Assoc. AIA and Oliva Backer, ArchitectureWorks who curated and designed the Alabama portion of the exhibit.
