Since 2010 the state of Alabama has required storm shelters in new school construction. Additionally, free-standing, single-purpose community storm shelters are becoming an increasingly common way of protecting people during extreme wind events. This session will address the unique design requirements of Storm Shelters and Safe Rooms.
- Overview of codes governing the design of storm shelters/safe rooms and discuss differences from IBC
- Discuss the differences between an ICC 500 compliant Storm Shelter and a FEMA 361 Compliant Safe Room
- Discuss the differences between hurricane shelter and a tornado shelter.
- Overview of some of the special design and construction requirements of a storm shelter/safe room.
- Overview of monolithic dome construction including construction sequence and typical details.
