Mountain Brook Estates: A Vision of Community
Leaders: Phillip Morris, Linda Nelson
Developer Robert Jemison Jr. and Boston-based landscape architect Warren Manning laid out Mountain Brook between 1926 and 1929. Their goal was to serve Birmingham homeowners who would commute between home and work by automobile. But unlike the discordant strips and subdivisions that would define post-World War II America, Mountain Brook carefully integrates various neighborhood functions into a harmonious whole.\
Mountain Brook Estates: A Vision of Community will cover elements of Manning’s plan. This tour will address the early commercial buildings that still anchor Mountain Brook Village, the loosening of architectural standards in decades following World War II and their recent re-establishment. It will end with an overview of the Lane Parke redevelopment now underway.
