The fading advertisements on the walls of Birmingham paint an illuminating picture of the men and women who built an industrial boomtown. Join Charles Buchanan, author of Fading Ads of Birmingham, to hear the colorful stories behind the signs and peer into the past. Tour lasts approximately two hours.
Charles Buchanan proved to his parents that he could read by reciting text on billboards during family road trips. Eventually, the Alabama native would help craft those words as an advertising copywriter. Today, Charles is editor of UAB Magazine and an artist whose works, inspired by Birmingham signs and other landmarks, have been featured on HGTV and in ReadyMade magazine. He also is the author of Fading Ads of Birmingham (2012: History Press), a book revealing the stories behind the city’s vintage painted signs.
