scholarshipsHello Smart Architects

So much to discuss with you. First give yourselves a pat on the back! Through generous contributions and the golf tournament, you guys awarded $9250 in scholarships. And contributed $6000 to the Alabama Center for Architecture capital improvement campaign (still accepting donations too). Nice work! We have AV equipment now, official donor signage and acoustics are in progress. Movie night coming soon!

It is that time of year, time to nominate new councilors for the 2016 AIA Birmingham board. Responsibilities include attending one board meeting a month, attend all state quarterly meetings, serve on a committee, attend chapter meetings, represent our membership and help promote the profession. We have a good time. The board meetings are not stuffy. We will present the 2016 board at the November 6th annual tradeshow. Not ready for that much of a commitment? Try a committee to test the waters. We are always looking for new peeps on committees and welcome FRESH NEW ideas. Design Awards this year will be a FRESH format, don’t miss it! Open to other new ideas, email aiabirm@aiabham.org or call 322.4386.

Enjoy the last days of summer vacation with your families and get ready for a rocking AIA Fall.

AIA Alabama Council State Convention: June 2015

state-convention

The annual AIA Alabama Council State Convention was held June 12-13 in Birmingham. On Friday, Robert Sproul lectured on his time under the tutelage of Renzo Piano, and drew comparisons with the work of Piano’s own mentor, Louis Kahn. The recently-completed Sloss Furnace Visitors Center hosted a friendly coaster-sculpting competition, tour of the historic grounds, and a reception stuffed with Saw’s BBQ.

On day two, Mic Patterson of Enclos gave a rather technical, but surprisingly lively, speech on curtainwall systems, why they suck, and how they are improving. Josh Shelton enthralled us with a presentation regarding oddities including rooftop boxcars and bacon-spewing parade floats created by his architecture-cum-installation firm, El Dorado. Ace Torre led a walking tour of the Birmingham Zoo while discussing contemporary trends in zoological design.

The entire affair concluded with our Beaux Arts Ball, featuring architectonic accouterments at the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts.______

May Meeting: What a Tenant Needs & Wants: An Owner’s Perspective

boma
On May 20th, AIA and BOMA held a joint panel discussion at the Alabama Power Auditorium. The discussion centered on how architects can help building owners deliver what tenants need in a building.

The panel consisted of:

  • David Blackmon, AIA, of Blackmon Rogers Architects
  • Elizabeth Wilson of Elizabeth Wilson Design LLC
  • Chad Wilson, of Murray Building
  • Betty Swann, Property Manager at Harbert Realty

With Robin White of Alabama Power as moderator, the panel answered questions regarding elements of a building a tenant finds most valuable and what services a building owner finds most valuable in an architect.  Also discussed was exactly when an architect, engineer or designer are needed or required in the development of a tenant space.

With lunch provided by Urban Cookhouse, the attendees had a great lunch along with a lively and informative discussion. Thanks to BOMA for partnering with us for this meeting — maybe we will do it again next year!!

Recap: April Meeting – Merging Form & Function through Social Media

April’s chapter meeting was held at the Alabama Center for Architecture. Ike Pigott, a communications strategist for Alabama Power, gave a presentation about social media and how it can be used to promote a business in any market. Mr. Pigott suggested making a 30 second video about why and when you decided to be an architect, that epiphany moment. He also discussed different ways architects could promote a specific project using a variety of social media tools. Cultivate the network that makes you smarter. He also shared with us his ten rules for social media:

Other Legislative Updates

Tax Credit for Historic Preservation Extended
HB214 by Rep. Victor Gaston (R) of Mobile would authorize a seven-year extension of the tax credit against the tax liability of certain taxpayers for the substantial rehabilitation of certain historic structures. The bill also eliminates the previous cap of $60 million for the program. The House passed the measure and it is now pending in the Senate Tourism and Marketing Committee.

Registration Board Sunset Bill Passes
HB164 by Rep. Howard Sanderford (R) of Huntsville will extend the life on the State Board for Registration of Architects until October 1, 2019, or until the 2018 Legislature approves their next Sunset Bill. Of key interest to all architects, the bill changes the current law to align reporting for CE credits to a calendar basis. Architect: Appleseed Workshop

Revelator Coffee Company was born in New Orleans and had planned to stay there. But after opening their first shop in downtown Birmingham, the company is opening its roastery and corporate headquarters nearby.

Birmingham’s Appleseed Workshop is renovating the 10,000 square foot warehouse at 730 1st Ave. N., just west of Interstate 65.

“It’s a nice 1970s warehouse, it’s really well built with some ribbon windows in there,” said Michael Gibson, president and principle architect at Appleseed. “The goal is to bring the Revelator aesthetic into it. It’s going to be kind of like an office and what they call ‘the lab,’ which is where they test different brews and different methods.”
