SUMMARY:Symbolic Influences in Design - February Chapter Meeting - 1 HSW
DESCRIPTION:February 16 | 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.\nIron City | 513 22nd St S\, Birmingham\, AL 35233\nRSVP to kathryn@aiabham.org\n$20 AIA members/sponsors\, $30 Nonmembers/Guests | Cash\, check or credit card at the door \nThis talk will explore infusing symbolic references in the Design process. We will see how this defines projects by looking at historic examples\, a few past projects of Tuck-Hinton Architects\, and then more recent work such as the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and the convention center (Music City Center). The more recent examples suggest why and how specific music icons and imagery of Nashville imparted the final design of those projects. \nSeab A. Tuck\, and his business partner Kem Hinton\, formed Tuck-Hinton Architects over 30 years ago. Their projects range from private residences to schools\, from college buildings to civic structures\, and from museums to commemorative parks. Such examples include the Frist Center for the Visual Arts\, the Bicentennial Capitol Mall\, the Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum\, Public Square Park\, Adventure Science Center\, Headquarters for Warner Bros. Records\, Country Music Association and Brooks Telecommunications. He more recently completed the Nashville Convention Center (Music City Center)\, and the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum Expansion\, and multiple projects on the Lipscomb University Campus. Seab received his Bachelor of Architecture from Auburn University in 1975. In 1998\, he was inducted into the prestigious College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects. In 2002 he received the Avalon Award for Creativity from Lipscomb University. Last year he was honored with The Tennessee Society of Architects Lifetime Achievement Award.

SUMMARY:Music & Architecture- January Chapter Meeting - 1 HSW
DESCRIPTION:“If architecture is frozen music\, is music liquid architecture?” – Frank Gehry \nJoin us as we continue celebrating the connection between architecture and music at a discussion panel featuring some of Birmingham’s best known musicians and venue owners. Architects want to hear what musicians\, artist hospitality reps\, venue owners and the users want in a venue. What do music venue users like or dislike in a venue? What do they wish architects would consider in a music venue?  Topics will include client concept of various music venues\, acoustics\, safety & security\, musician and performer experience and form/function. \nPanelists: \nNeil Davis\, AIA\, President of Davis Architecture \nA 1976 Auburn University graduate\, Davis serves as the President of Davis Architects. One of his early large projects was the transformation of a Samford University dormitory into the Beeson School of Divinity. Mr. Davis has since worked in civic\, institutional\, religious and educational sectors. He has designed music venues and concert halls\, such as Samford University’s Jane Hollock Brock Recital Hall\, Hewitt Trussville High School auditorium\, Corner High School auditorium\, and more. His contributions to architectural design through his nearly 40-year career reflect a lifelong commitment to design excellence. \nBrian Teasley\, Owner of Saturn and Satellite \nTeasley is a musician\, writer\, record dealer\, concert promoter and currently the owner of Saturn and The Satellite in Avondale. He studied communications at Auburn University\, has owned recording studios across the southeast and has been a member of several bands\, including Man or Astro-Man?\, The Boster and Servotron\, Japancakes\, St. Vincent\, Tyro\, Watts\, The Mono Men\, Har Mar Superstar\, the Vue and The Polyphonic Spree. He performed music for “Space Ghost Coast to Coast” and other television shows\, and toured with the “Mr. Show Tour” and “The Comedians of Comedy”. In 2006 he partnered with Brad and Merrilee Challiss to open Bottletree on 3rd Avenue South. With Teasley and Leah Hutchinson’s Secret History Productions booking acts\, the cafe and venue quickly established itself as a keystone of Birmingham’s music scene and helped put the city on the national touring map. Teasley parted ways with Bottletree in 2014 and opened the Saturn venue and The Satellite coffee shop in nearby Avondale.\n\nSean Price\, Guitarist for ERRA \nSean Price\, a Birmingham native\, is a a professional touring musician with rock band ERRA. LLC\, signed to Sumerian Records and managed by Royal Division. He is endorsed by companies such as Ibanez Guitars and EMG Pickups. He played music all throughout his younger years including marching band and jazz band at Homewood High School. He played in various projects growing up such as Romagna and Alserene. Price joined ERRA in 2013 and has since been touring full time across the US\, Canada and Japan. \nAaron Greene\, Sound Engineer at Workplay and Owner of The Syndicate Lounge \nHailing from Anniston\, AL\, Aaron Greene began his music career as the manager of the historical 1213 Club where he produced and performed. His career as a producer officially kicked off while working for his college radio station 92J at Jacksonville State University. After graduating\, Aaron spent the majority of his time working as a freelance engineer recording major concerts and festivals all over the country. Missing home\, Aaron sought out the best venue in the Southeast (WorkPlay.) Interested in the theatre\, the only soundstage in AL\, and the recording studios\, Aaron had found his niche. The past few years he has completely redesigned the WorkPlay Studios into two state-of-the-art control rooms and has restructured the engineer department at the venue. Consistent time in the studio has led Aaron to recording nationally touring artists: Sam Bush\, Matusyahu\, Son Volt\, Manchester Orchestra\, Conspirator\, The Devil Makes Three\, Willie Sugarcapps\, Filligar\, Freelance Wells\, Jimbo Mathus\, Shooter Jennings\, Sturgill Simpson Wet Willie\, RED\, Pop Evil and locals Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit\, St. Paul & The Broken Bones\, The Clear\, The Ramblers\, Chevy 6\, Black Montana\, Gucci Mane\, Rich Boy\, Of Empires\, Matt Smith\, Kill Baby Kill\, and The Banditos; this list is only ½ of the artists Aaron has had the honor to work with. “Music is the science of my life” says Aaron “lets make music together.” Aaron is also the owner of The Syndicate Lounge\, a Birmingham bar and performance venue. \n______ \n$15\, lunch included \nRSVP to kathryn@aiabham.org by Jan. 15. \nCancellation policy: Must give 24 hours’ notice of cancellation. If you cancel less than 24 hours before or do not show up to the meeting without notice\, you will be billed the cost of the meeting.

SUMMARY:Social and Community Engaged Art: The Genuine and the Artificial - 1 HSW
DESCRIPTION:Lecture by MacArthur Foundation Fellow Rick Lowe \nMacArthur Fellow and current Breeden Scholar in Residence at Auburn University Rick Lowe is an artist whose unconventional approach to community revitalization has transformed a long-neglected neighborhood in Houston into a visionary public art project that continues to evolve\, two decades since its inception. Originally trained as a painter\, Lowe shifted the focus of his artistic practice in the early 1990s in order to address more directly the pressing social\, economic\, and cultural needs of his community. \nWith a group of fellow artists\, he organized the purchase and restoration of a block and a half of derelict properties—twenty-two shotgun houses from the 1930s—in Houston’s predominantly African American Third Ward and turned them into Project Row Houses (PRH)\, an unusual amalgam of arts venue and community support center. Lowe has initiated similarly arts-driven redevelopment projects in other cities\, including Los Angeles\, New Orleans\, and North Dallas. Lowe’s pioneering “social sculptures” have inspired a generation of artists to explore more socially engaged forms of art-making in communities across the country.\nRick Lowe is an Alabama native who attended Columbus College and studied visual arts at Texas Southern University in Houston. He is currently the Breeden Scholar in Residence at Auburn University. Along with his MacArthur Genius Grant\, Lowe is also the recipient of the Annenberg Prize for Art and Social Change and the Heinz Award in the Arts and Humanities.
