SUMMARY:Site Visit: Roundhouse in Mountain Brook
DESCRIPTION:February 12\, 2015\n4:30-5:30\n3349 Brookwood Road\nMountain Brook\, AL 35233\nArchitect: Design Initiative\nOriginal Architect: Fritz Woehle (early 1960s)\nParking: Park on the side of the road. Carpooling is strongly recommended.\nThis modest contemporary residence is benched into a wooded hillside in the quiet traditional neighborhood of Mountain Brook. The original Fritz Woehle design boasted a glass wall around a cylindrical volume pierced by a brick wall plane. The brick wall separates the living area from the rest of the program and creates a unique dining room with a conical ceiling\, lit by a diffuse skylight. Throughout the years and subsequent renovations/owners\, the original design intent was in many ways lost. This renovation aims to restore much of the original design\, as well as create a new two story living room volume\, optimize as much of the existing square footage\, and act as a backdrop from the owners extensive art collection.

SUMMARY:Cocktails & Bar Design - 1 HSW - 50th Celebration Series
DESCRIPTION:  \nAIA Birmingham\, in partnership with Alabama Power\, is excited to bring you the first in our 50th Anniversary Celebration Series. The Cocktails & Bar Design (1 AIA HSW) class will be a time to learn exactly what bartenders want in bar design — all while you network & enjoy libations. \nBorn and raised in Birmingham\, Eric grew up in Irondale. He attended Shades Valley/JCIB and went on to study chemistry at Birmingham-Southern College. While in college\, he began working for the Brio/Bravo Restaurant Group as a server\, and quickly later as a bartender. Extremely interested in the world of alcohol\, he began doing research on how to mix drinks – historically and in a contemporary bar setting. Through this research and tasting as many different flavors as possible\, he gained an understanding of how making cocktails was done. After a few visits to craft cocktail bars in larger cities\, he then understood that crafting cocktails could evolve into an actual profession. He was given the opportunity to manage the bar program at Bettola\, one of Birmingham’s highest acclaimed restaurants\, and also opened their sister restaurant Vittoria Macelleria. For the last 2 years\, he has had the opportunity to manage the bar program at Carrigan’s Public House\, a gastropub focused on quality beer\, cocktails\, and food and blurring the lines between craft and volume. Eric is married to a wonderful architect and lives in Homewood. \n$15  for members; $30 for nonmembers. \nPrice includes one drink ticket. \nMUST RSVP to kathryn@aiabham.org by 1.30.15. \n  \nCancellation Policy: We require 24 hour notice on all cancellations. If you RSVP and do not cancel\, you will be charged the full amount for the event. \n

SUMMARY:“Embracing Silence” Photo Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us in the ACFA for “Embracing Silence\,” a black and white photography exhibit of Moss Rock Preserve. This display features images captured at Moss Rock\, a 349-acre refuge of boulder fields\, sandstone glades\, waterfalls\, native plants and wildlife in the heart of Hoover. \nAbout the photographer: Joseph De Sciose (http://www.jdesciose.com/ ) was a senior photographer at Southern Living Magazine for more than five years shooting gardens\, travel and lifestyle stories. He won the Garden Globe Award for “Best Photography for a Garden Book” by the Garden Writers’ Association for the Flower Gardener’s Bible. His work has also been featured in several additional books. \nARTIST’S STATEMENT \nJOSEPH De SCIOSE \nWhen I started my work in garden and horticulture photography more than 20 years ago\, I didn’t know the difference between a hydrangea and a hibiscus. By now I’ve shot every kind of landscape I could find\, from expertly-designed gardens and landscapes to wild glades\, seascapes and rock formations. I’ve concentrated on color since the 1990s\, training my eye for hue and shade\, tone and translucence. Before digital\, I simply didn’t have the temperament for the long hours of darkroom work. \nAnd yet\, when I began to make photographs for this project\, I knew the pictures had to be black and white. The structure of the boulder fields moved me first. The massive stones had a monumentalism that I believed only black and white pictures could capture. Next\, the textures of the sandstone glade: striated light and dark\, almost otherworldly\, seemed to insist on stark composition. Every surface\, shimmering or dull combined with the variety of trees\, lichen\, moss and wild flowers demanded scrutiny. The graphic juxtapositions of rock and plant life are overwhelming and inspirational. \nIn the 19th and early 20th century\, photographers worked in black and white because they had to\, but I had a choice. I decided that black and white photos were what Moss Rock deserved\, perhaps even desired. \nThe 349-acre Moss Rock Preserve is a paradox. It is a quiet\, wild place of great bio-diversity\, but surrounded by suburban development. It is not a true wilderness\, as the footprint of man is everywhere. There are magnificent hiking trails and footbridges\, as well as graffiti art\, litter and power lines. \nThank you to the Alabama Center for Architecture for making this presentation possible and to the City of Hoover for ensuring that The Moss Rock Preserve is available to the public.

SUMMARY:1 HSW -- Where’s the Big Idea? Informal Interaction in the Workplace by Margaret Serrato -- Presented by Office Environments and Herman Miller
DESCRIPTION:Herman Miller & Office Environments present\n“Where’s the Big Idea? Informal Interaction in the Workplace”\n1 HSW\nWednesday\, November 19\, 2014\n11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.\nAlabama Center for Architecture\n109 Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd S.\nBirmingham\, AL 35233\nLunch will be provided. \nRSVP to rsvp@officenvironments.com.  \n  \nAs global competition increases\, organizations understand that they must create a collaborative culture that supports innovation while still responding to ongoing project demands.\nWorkplace research has identified that effective informal communication is a common feature of organizations that have managed this transition well. The challenge for interior designers is to understand how space planning affects where and how often informal interactions will occur.\nThis presentation explores the nature and importance of Informal interaction and demonstrates the practical application of Space Syntax\, a method for predicting patterns of movement and interaction.
