SUMMARY:Healthcare and Hospitality Expo presented by Sherwin WIlliams (1 HSW)
DESCRIPTION:1 HSW!!!! CEU starts at 11:00 a.m. \nTraditionally considered principally in terms of aesthetics\, technological advancements in paint and coatings now let them deliver much more to a healthcare environment than a soothing color. In this course\, you will learn how innovations in certain coating technologies support critical initiatives in acute-care and long-term care facilities. Whether it’s by battling hospital-acquired infections by helping to prevent the spread of certain bacteria\, reducing common indoor odors\, or improving indoor air quality by reducing VOC levels from potential sources like insulation\, carpet\, cabinets\, and fabrics\, find out more about how paint can take an active role in the health care setting. Examining the cumulative benefits\, learn how these advanced coating technologies generate real value for facility managers while enabling architects and designers to specify wall and surface coatings that are visually stimulating and much more. \nRSVP by calling 205-968-3775 or emailing Tim at Swrep4457@sherwin.com. \nView the course description here: Advanced Coatings for Healthcare Facilities Course Description [v1]

SUMMARY:Security and Design: January Chapter Meeting - 1 HSW
DESCRIPTION:“Crime Prevention through Environmental Design”\nToday\, society continues to debate the role that architecture should play when it comes to security. There’s an abundance of abysmal examples: buildings buttressed by jersey walls\, metal spikes\, barbed wire\, bars\, and berms or surrounded by a phalanx of security; defensive architecture designed to function like a fortress or retrofitted with tacked-on deterrents. How\, then\, should architects design safe spaces that are also beautiful and humane? This presentation will explore how architects can move beyond the bunker and create buildings abroad that are capable of keeping people inspired as well as safe. \n$15 members\, $30 nonmembers \nCancellation policy: Must give 24 hours’ notice of cancellation. If you cancel less than 24 hours before or do not show up to the meeting without notice\, you will be billed the cost of the meeting.  \n————————————————- \nWith more than 35 years of experience\, Patrick Gilbert\, AIA\, of Gresham Smith & Partners Nashville office\, has overseen many complex programs for premier clients across the U.S. He brings a wealth of experience collaborating with project stakeholders to evaluate each project’s unique challenges and provide effective design solutions. Patrick’s specialized expertise includes projects with heavy emphasis on security\, sustainability and code compliance. He has delivered successful projects for clients such as Community Health Systems\, Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority\, Deloitte LLP and Tennessee Valley Authority. \nPatrick is a member of the American Institute of Architects and the co-chair of ULI Nashville’s Housing Action Council. He is a LEED Accredited Professional and a graduate of The University of Tennessee\, Knoxville. \nGresham\, Smith and Partners’ award-winning architects\, engineers\, interior designers and planners serve a variety of clients from 24 offices throughout the United States and around the world. Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2017\, GS&P opened its first office outside of Nashville in Birmingham more than 35 years ago.

SUMMARY:"Breath and Shadow" and "Echo" Exhibitions -- Sara Garden Armstrong
DESCRIPTION:“Breath and Shadow” Exhibition at Alabama School of Fine Arts (ASFA) \n1800 Rev. Abraham Woods  Jr. Blvd.\nBirmingham\, AL 35203 \nFebruary 2nd – March 4th\, 2017 \nOpening Reception: February 2nd\, 5-7 p.m. \n  \nEcho\, 21st Street Studio Gallery\, curated by Cumbee Tyndal \n111 Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd. South\, Birmingham\, AL 35233\nFebruary 2 (6:00 PM – 9:00 PM\, opening) – March 4\, 2017 \n  \nArtist Statement: \nThis exhibition combines and opposes artwork from different periods to form a new installation where breath\, shadow\, and curve connect the space into a whole. \nEarly drawings of interpreted sound echo into neighboring breathing sculptures; the light of these forms mirrors the light traveling towards torso forms. Nearby\, both cast and painted shadows materialize as light moves through growth forms connected to orchestrated blower boxes. These reverberating relationships within the installation alter the space into a living\, breathing environment of air\, light\, sound\, and marks. \nIn the fall of 2016\, the junior class at ASFA began working visits to my studio. We discussed my work and process as the class generated ideas\, thoughts\, and questions. In addition to assisting with some paper making for the exhibition\, the students are creating an artist book containing their own interpretive drawings of the sculptures to be given to guests at the opening. In January 2017\, the class will have more hands-on work with both the installation and the artist books. \n
