SUMMARY:2nd Annual Bham FEAST / A Community Action Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Host / bhamFEAST \nVenue / Birmingham Blueprint Building – Directions \n$45 Tickets  \nLimited Space (150) \nHow might we expand learning opportunities for school-age children in our community? \nDuring this farm-to-table dinner\, attendees will hear presentations from finalists of a city-wide challenge that hopes to develop meaningful\, grassroots answers to that question.  Presenters may be educators and non-educators\, designers and non-designers\, adults and students—anyone who may have an idea and the drive to help expand a child’s learning experience inside or outside of the classroom. \nAnd you will do more than enjoy your meal at this dinner\, because during Bham FEAST diners vote to democratically fund a project that uses design as a transformative tool to better their community. The winner will be awarded a grant of approximately $5000 at the end of the dinner to act on their concept.  Part of the grant comes from you in the purchase of your ticket and part it comes from DWB itself to support  non-traditional use of design within our community. \nFor more information visit www.bhamfeast.com \nDoors open at 6:00. Presentations start promptly at 6:30.

SUMMARY:20% of the Fee and 80% of the Liability: Navigating the Minefield of Construction Contract Administration
DESCRIPTION:20% of the Fee and 80% of the Liability: Navigating the Minefield of Construction Contract Administration\nand\nEvaluating Professional Ethics & Conduct Through Case Studies\nSpeaker — Barbara Sable\, RLI Insurance Company\nWednesday\, October 28\n2-5 pm\, registration at 1:30 pm\nVestavia Country Club\nFREE\nSnacks will be available.\nRSVP to Cassie Hall\, 205-397-5133 or chall@jrprewitt.com\n  \nParticipants in this seminar will learn or better understand: \nThe typical design professional fee is split 80% for the design and construction document creation and 20% for construction contract administration services. While construction contract administration is an essential service offered by design professionals\, most claims against design professionals now include an allegation relating to negligence in the construction contract administration services. Owners increasingly expect design professionals to protect them from improper performance of the contractor\, or to take risks related to design changes and substitutions intended to modify project cost. This course will explore the risks that design professionals face when providing construction contract administration services. We will identify the sources of these risks and learn how design professionals can mitigate them without compromising public health\, safety and welfare. \n

SUMMARY:Music & Architecture- January Chapter Meeting - 1 HSW
DESCRIPTION:“If architecture is frozen music\, is music liquid architecture?” – Frank Gehry \nJoin us as we continue celebrating the connection between architecture and music at a discussion panel featuring some of Birmingham’s best known musicians and venue owners. Architects want to hear what musicians\, artist hospitality reps\, venue owners and the users want in a venue. What do music venue users like or dislike in a venue? What do they wish architects would consider in a music venue?  Topics will include client concept of various music venues\, acoustics\, safety & security\, musician and performer experience and form/function. \nPanelists: \nNeil Davis\, AIA\, President of Davis Architecture \nA 1976 Auburn University graduate\, Davis serves as the President of Davis Architects. One of his early large projects was the transformation of a Samford University dormitory into the Beeson School of Divinity. Mr. Davis has since worked in civic\, institutional\, religious and educational sectors. He has designed music venues and concert halls\, such as Samford University’s Jane Hollock Brock Recital Hall\, Hewitt Trussville High School auditorium\, Corner High School auditorium\, and more. His contributions to architectural design through his nearly 40-year career reflect a lifelong commitment to design excellence. \nBrian Teasley\, Owner of Saturn and Satellite \nTeasley is a musician\, writer\, record dealer\, concert promoter and currently the owner of Saturn and The Satellite in Avondale. He studied communications at Auburn University\, has owned recording studios across the southeast and has been a member of several bands\, including Man or Astro-Man?\, The Boster and Servotron\, Japancakes\, St. Vincent\, Tyro\, Watts\, The Mono Men\, Har Mar Superstar\, the Vue and The Polyphonic Spree. He performed music for “Space Ghost Coast to Coast” and other television shows\, and toured with the “Mr. Show Tour” and “The Comedians of Comedy”. In 2006 he partnered with Brad and Merrilee Challiss to open Bottletree on 3rd Avenue South. With Teasley and Leah Hutchinson’s Secret History Productions booking acts\, the cafe and venue quickly established itself as a keystone of Birmingham’s music scene and helped put the city on the national touring map. Teasley parted ways with Bottletree in 2014 and opened the Saturn venue and The Satellite coffee shop in nearby Avondale.\n\nSean Price\, Guitarist for ERRA \nSean Price\, a Birmingham native\, is a a professional touring musician with rock band ERRA. LLC\, signed to Sumerian Records and managed by Royal Division. He is endorsed by companies such as Ibanez Guitars and EMG Pickups. He played music all throughout his younger years including marching band and jazz band at Homewood High School. He played in various projects growing up such as Romagna and Alserene. Price joined ERRA in 2013 and has since been touring full time across the US\, Canada and Japan. \nAaron Greene\, Sound Engineer at Workplay and Owner of The Syndicate Lounge \nHailing from Anniston\, AL\, Aaron Greene began his music career as the manager of the historical 1213 Club where he produced and performed. His career as a producer officially kicked off while working for his college radio station 92J at Jacksonville State University. After graduating\, Aaron spent the majority of his time working as a freelance engineer recording major concerts and festivals all over the country. Missing home\, Aaron sought out the best venue in the Southeast (WorkPlay.) Interested in the theatre\, the only soundstage in AL\, and the recording studios\, Aaron had found his niche. The past few years he has completely redesigned the WorkPlay Studios into two state-of-the-art control rooms and has restructured the engineer department at the venue. Consistent time in the studio has led Aaron to recording nationally touring artists: Sam Bush\, Matusyahu\, Son Volt\, Manchester Orchestra\, Conspirator\, The Devil Makes Three\, Willie Sugarcapps\, Filligar\, Freelance Wells\, Jimbo Mathus\, Shooter Jennings\, Sturgill Simpson Wet Willie\, RED\, Pop Evil and locals Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit\, St. Paul & The Broken Bones\, The Clear\, The Ramblers\, Chevy 6\, Black Montana\, Gucci Mane\, Rich Boy\, Of Empires\, Matt Smith\, Kill Baby Kill\, and The Banditos; this list is only ½ of the artists Aaron has had the honor to work with. “Music is the science of my life” says Aaron “lets make music together.” Aaron is also the owner of The Syndicate Lounge\, a Birmingham bar and performance venue. \n______ \n$15\, lunch included \nRSVP to kathryn@aiabham.org by Jan. 15. \nCancellation policy: Must give 24 hours’ notice of cancellation. If you cancel less than 24 hours before or do not show up to the meeting without notice\, you will be billed the cost of the meeting.

SUMMARY:AIA Gulf States Region 2016 Honor Awards: Forms & Fees Due
DESCRIPTION:AIA Gulf States Region Honor Awards 2016\nCall for Entries\nOverview\nThe AIA Gulf States Region Honor Awards Program celebrates the quality of Architecture in our region and pays tribute to our deserving Architects for their design excellence. Philip E. Black\, AIA (Simonton Swaika Black Architects\, Inc.\, Birmingham) is our Program Chair for the 2016 Honor Awards. Questions: Call Sheila Leggett at 615/254-1233. \nHow to Enter\nThe 2016 AIA Gulf States Region Honor Awards submission will be in an electronic format. Upon receipt of your entry form and fee\, you will be provided an official PowerPoint template with step-by-step instructions for use in electronic submission. The template has been designed so that you will be able to drop your text and images into a preset layout. To maintain consistency and fairness\, no modifications to the layout will be accepted. \nThe electronic format facilitates a submission in which all images contribute to supporting the program statement. Each visual should have a purpose as it relates to the larger idea. The photos should contain a few compelling pieces of information to make the statement readily understood from a quick scan. Be sure to label plans clearly\, indicating a north arrow. Within each square\, you can layer images and plans or place images side-by-side. The area beneath the slide entry number is available to you to place statements to further illustrate your point. Keep in mind the impact the image will make once projected on a large screen. \nThere are three steps to the entry process. First\, Submit entry form\, fee and classification by February 2\, 2016. Second: You will receive a Code Number and complete PowerPoint template for each entry via email. Third: Submit your entry via UPLOAD by 5:00 p.m. on March 10\, 2016. No submittals will be accepted via email. \nEligibility\nAny architectural project completed after January 2011 which has been designed by\, or in collaboration with\, an AIA member of the Gulf States Region is eligible for submission. Projects may have been executed anywhere. Firms are encouraged to submit previously submitted non-winning projects or ones which have won awards in other programs. \nThe Honor Awards program is open to architectural projects of all classifications. An entry may be of one building\, a related group of buildings forming a single project\, or an interior design project. The term “building” includes any new architectonic composition as well as the remodeling\, rehabilitation\, and/or preservation of existing structures. \nClassification\nFor clarity only\, please designate the general classification of the submitted project. The basic classifications are as follows: New Construction; Renovation/Restoration; Architectural Interior Design. Jurors will select from the collection of all entries and shall not be obligated to provide awards for each classification. \nAwards\nEach project will be judged according to its own merit\, how well it solves the problem addressed\, and sustainability. Projects will not be judged in competition with each other\, but by measuring the architect’s performance against each project’s potential. Awards can be given in three categories: Honor Awards\, Honor Citations and Merit Awards. Honor Awards will be granted for overall design excellence. Honor Citations will be granted to projects worthy of recognition because of their design quality. Merit Awards will be granted at the discretion of the jury. These awards will be designated by a jury of architects whose work and reputations have been established at a national level of the profession. Award recipients will be announced and awards presented at the Gulf States Regional Reception and Honor Awards Friday May 20\, during the 2016 AIA National Convention in Philadelphia. \nSubmittal guidelines are detailed completely in the Submittal Instructions which will be sent with your code number\, but keep in mind the following: \nThe following will be required for integration into the PowerPoint template: \nProject Information. Include program statement\, program summary\, area and cost per square foot\, construction cost\, date of completion\, project code number and classification. \nPlans and Drawings. Include site plan\, floor plan(s) or details describing special features\, construction systems\, “before” views\, etc. \nPhotography/Images. Include exterior views showing major elevations\, interior views (one or more)\, other views or details describing special features\, nighttime images\, construction systems\, “before” views\, etc. The maximum size of images is 750k per slide. It is the responsibility of the entrant to obtain all clearances for use \n**** IMPORTANT REQUIREMENT **** \nTo assist with PR/publicity of the Honor Award projects\, please also include AS A SEPARATE FILE ON THE CD – one photograph to be used for PR purposes. Be certain you identify the photographer and give credit. The photograph should be in jpeg or similar format\, no larger \nthan 5 MB. \nTo acknowledge excellence in Architecture\, AIA Gulf States Region conducts an Annual Honor Awards Program. This Honors program identifies built works of distinction designed by AIA members in the states of Alabama\, Arkansas\, Louisiana\, Mississippi and Tennessee. These awards also bring greater public recognition to our Gulf States Region’s outstanding Architects and their remarkable projects. Philip Black\, AIA – Alabama will chair the 2016 Program. Questions: Call Sheila Leggett at 615-254-1233. \n\n \nENTRY FORM (please print and mail\, fax or email to Sheila)\nSubmitted are _______ entries for the 2016 Honor Awards Program. \nEnclosed is a check for $_____________ covering the $150 entry fee for each entry. \nArchitect Name_______________________________________________________ \nFirm________________________________________________________________ \nAddress_____________________________________________________________ \nCity\, State\, Zip________________________________________________________ \nPhone___________________ Email (required) ______________________________ \nA separate Code Number will be assigned to each entry. SUMMARY:Symbolic Influences in Design - February Chapter Meeting - 1 HSW
DESCRIPTION:February 16 | 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.\nIron City | 513 22nd St S\, Birmingham\, AL 35233\nRSVP to kathryn@aiabham.org\n$20 AIA members/sponsors\, $30 Nonmembers/Guests | Cash\, check or credit card at the door \nThis talk will explore infusing symbolic references in the Design process. We will see how this defines projects by looking at historic examples\, a few past projects of Tuck-Hinton Architects\, and then more recent work such as the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and the convention center (Music City Center). The more recent examples suggest why and how specific music icons and imagery of Nashville imparted the final design of those projects. \nSeab A. Tuck\, and his business partner Kem Hinton\, formed Tuck-Hinton Architects over 30 years ago. Their projects range from private residences to schools\, from college buildings to civic structures\, and from museums to commemorative parks. Such examples include the Frist Center for the Visual Arts\, the Bicentennial Capitol Mall\, the Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum\, Public Square Park\, Adventure Science Center\, Headquarters for Warner Bros. Records\, Country Music Association and Brooks Telecommunications. He more recently completed the Nashville Convention Center (Music City Center)\, and the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum Expansion\, and multiple projects on the Lipscomb University Campus. Seab received his Bachelor of Architecture from Auburn University in 1975. In 1998\, he was inducted into the prestigious College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects. In 2002 he received the Avalon Award for Creativity from Lipscomb University. Last year he was honored with The Tennessee Society of Architects Lifetime Achievement Award.
