We’ll then look at how these activities can be supported with an optimal arrangement of settings that contain the right mix of surroundings\, tools\, and furnishings. The approach is descriptive rather than prescriptive. Attendees will be able to link research insights with design strategies to provide solutions that answer the unique needs of each organization and its people. \nMary Kathryn German Bio\nAs the A&D Market Manager and Living Office Specialist for Herman Miller\, Mary Kathryn is responsible for consulting on workplace applications\, trends\, solutions and services. SUMMARY:2nd Annual Bham FEAST / A Community Action Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Host / bhamFEAST \nVenue / Birmingham Blueprint Building – Directions \n$45 Tickets  \nLimited Space (150) \nHow might we expand learning opportunities for school-age children in our community? \nDuring this farm-to-table dinner\, attendees will hear presentations from finalists of a city-wide challenge that hopes to develop meaningful\, grassroots answers to that question.  Presenters may be educators and non-educators\, designers and non-designers\, adults and students—anyone who may have an idea and the drive to help expand a child’s learning experience inside or outside of the classroom. \nAnd you will do more than enjoy your meal at this dinner\, because during Bham FEAST diners vote to democratically fund a project that uses design as a transformative tool to better their community. The winner will be awarded a grant of approximately $5000 at the end of the dinner to act on their concept.  Part of the grant comes from you in the purchase of your ticket and part it comes from DWB itself to support  non-traditional use of design within our community. \nFor more information visit www.bhamfeast.com \nDoors open at 6:00. Presentations start promptly at 6:30.

SUMMARY:20% of the Fee and 80% of the Liability: Navigating the Minefield of Construction Contract Administration
DESCRIPTION:20% of the Fee and 80% of the Liability: Navigating the Minefield of Construction Contract Administration\nand\nEvaluating Professional Ethics & Conduct Through Case Studies\nSpeaker — Barbara Sable\, RLI Insurance Company\nWednesday\, October 28\n2-5 pm\, registration at 1:30 pm\nVestavia Country Club\nFREE\nSnacks will be available.\nRSVP to Cassie Hall\, 205-397-5133 or chall@jrprewitt.com\n  \nParticipants in this seminar will learn or better understand: \nThe typical design professional fee is split 80% for the design and construction document creation and 20% for construction contract administration services. While construction contract administration is an essential service offered by design professionals\, most claims against design professionals now include an allegation relating to negligence in the construction contract administration services. Owners increasingly expect design professionals to protect them from improper performance of the contractor\, or to take risks related to design changes and substitutions intended to modify project cost. This course will explore the risks that design professionals face when providing construction contract administration services. We will identify the sources of these risks and learn how design professionals can mitigate them without compromising public health\, safety and welfare. \n

SUMMARY:Music & Architecture- January Chapter Meeting - 1 HSW
DESCRIPTION:“If architecture is frozen music\, is music liquid architecture?” – Frank Gehry \nJoin us as we continue celebrating the connection between architecture and music at a discussion panel featuring some of Birmingham’s best known musicians and venue owners. Architects want to hear what musicians\, artist hospitality reps\, venue owners and the users want in a venue. What do music venue users like or dislike in a venue? What do they wish architects would consider in a music venue?  Topics will include client concept of various music venues\, acoustics\, safety & security\, musician and performer experience and form/function. \nPanelists: \nNeil Davis\, AIA\, President of Davis Architecture \nA 1976 Auburn University graduate\, Davis serves as the President of Davis Architects. One of his early large projects was the transformation of a Samford University dormitory into the Beeson School of Divinity. Mr. Davis has since worked in civic\, institutional\, religious and educational sectors. He has designed music venues and concert halls\, such as Samford University’s Jane Hollock Brock Recital Hall\, Hewitt Trussville High School auditorium\, Corner High School auditorium\, and more. His contributions to architectural design through his nearly 40-year career reflect a lifelong commitment to design excellence. \nBrian Teasley\, Owner of Saturn and Satellite \nTeasley is a musician\, writer\, record dealer\, concert promoter and currently the owner of Saturn and The Satellite in Avondale. He studied communications at Auburn University\, has owned recording studios across the southeast and has been a member of several bands\, including Man or Astro-Man?\, The Boster and Servotron\, Japancakes\, St. Vincent\, Tyro\, Watts\, The Mono Men\, Har Mar Superstar\, the Vue and The Polyphonic Spree. He performed music for “Space Ghost Coast to Coast” and other television shows\, and toured with the “Mr. Show Tour” and “The Comedians of Comedy”. In 2006 he partnered with Brad and Merrilee Challiss to open Bottletree on 3rd Avenue South. With Teasley and Leah Hutchinson’s Secret History Productions booking acts\, the cafe and venue quickly established itself as a keystone of Birmingham’s music scene and helped put the city on the national touring map. Teasley parted ways with Bottletree in 2014 and opened the Saturn venue and The Satellite coffee shop in nearby Avondale.\n\nSean Price\, Guitarist for ERRA \nSean Price\, a Birmingham native\, is a a professional touring musician with rock band ERRA. LLC\, signed to Sumerian Records and managed by Royal Division. He is endorsed by companies such as Ibanez Guitars and EMG Pickups. He played music all throughout his younger years including marching band and jazz band at Homewood High School. He played in various projects growing up such as Romagna and Alserene. Price joined ERRA in 2013 and has since been touring full time across the US\, Canada and Japan. \nAaron Greene\, Sound Engineer at Workplay and Owner of The Syndicate Lounge \nHailing from Anniston\, AL\, Aaron Greene began his music career as the manager of the historical 1213 Club where he produced and performed. His career as a producer officially kicked off while working for his college radio station 92J at Jacksonville State University. After graduating\, Aaron spent the majority of his time working as a freelance engineer recording major concerts and festivals all over the country. Missing home\, Aaron sought out the best venue in the Southeast (WorkPlay.) Interested in the theatre\, the only soundstage in AL\, and the recording studios\, Aaron had found his niche. The past few years he has completely redesigned the WorkPlay Studios into two state-of-the-art control rooms and has restructured the engineer department at the venue. Consistent time in the studio has led Aaron to recording nationally touring artists: Sam Bush\, Matusyahu\, Son Volt\, Manchester Orchestra\, Conspirator\, The Devil Makes Three\, Willie Sugarcapps\, Filligar\, Freelance Wells\, Jimbo Mathus\, Shooter Jennings\, Sturgill Simpson Wet Willie\, RED\, Pop Evil and locals Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit\, St. Paul & The Broken Bones\, The Clear\, The Ramblers\, Chevy 6\, Black Montana\, Gucci Mane\, Rich Boy\, Of Empires\, Matt Smith\, Kill Baby Kill\, and The Banditos; this list is only ½ of the artists Aaron has had the honor to work with. “Music is the science of my life” says Aaron “lets make music together.” Aaron is also the owner of The Syndicate Lounge\, a Birmingham bar and performance venue. \n______ \n$15\, lunch included \nRSVP to kathryn@aiabham.org by Jan. 15. \nCancellation policy: Must give 24 hours’ notice of cancellation. If you cancel less than 24 hours before or do not show up to the meeting without notice\, you will be billed the cost of the meeting.
