SUMMARY:Listen Up! Historic Preservation Conference of Mississippi
DESCRIPTION:Are you all signed up for the Listen Up! Historic Preservation Conference in Tupelo?  An all-star cast of Mississippi’s most creative and innovative preservationists will share their extensive knowledge about how to make projects come alive in your neck of the woods. \nSunday\, June 8 \nCome early to catch the Elvis Gospel Brunch that morning and tour Highland Circle with Bruce Smith that afternoon. Cool down after your jaunt with a cocktail in Doyce and Bill Deas’ lovely garden and catch up with your fellow preservationists at the Welcome Party and MHT Annual Meeting. \nMonday\, June 9 \nAfter a warm welcome to lovely historic Tupelo by Mayor Jason Shelton\, Ernesto Caldeira of Woodville will spin a colorful yarn about his efforts to ensure that Woodville is a place that “gets it” when it comes to historic preservation.  Next up\, noted preservation architect Belinda Stewart will help participants learn to “read” a historic building\, from clues to its original design to later changes and their significance.  Belinda will also share some stories about her extensive work in historic preservation around Mississippi.  Thanks to AIA Mississippi\, this session qualifies for one hour of CEU credit. \nOver lunch\, developers Chris Chain\, John McClure andDeborah Midanekwill share insights about their approach to making preservation projects happen\, answering that age-old preservation question\, “how did they pull that one off?”.  We will leave a little time for exploration\, as we learn about the exciting future of the J.J. Rogers Building\, an amazingly cool historic cotton mill. \nAfter lunch\, Chelius Carter and Jodi Skipper with Preserve Marshall County & Holly Springs will fill us in on what it has taken to launch the highly successful Behind the Big House tour program\, which expanded the Holly Springs Pilgrimage to new audiences.   Robert Saarnio\, Director of the University Museum and Historic Houses\, will then weave a tale about the key role of preservation in building a successful heritage tourism program.  We will end our day of learning on a positive note as Ken P’Pool with the Mississippi Department of Archives and History shares his considerable insight on how communities can use historic preservation to recover their sense of identity after a disaster. \nMonday afternoon\, eat\, drink and visit with our wonderfully talented exhibitors while putting the finishing touches on your preservation journal before heading over to the Tupelo Shindig-Powered by Pecha Kucha.  Admission is free\, with a suggested $25 donation that will go to helping the historic Joyner neighborhood in its recovery from the recent tornado.  Tap your toes to the soulful harmonica blues of the Blues Doctors and sip a Yalobusha beer while enjoying the lavish Bo-Saam spread prepared by the talented folks at the Neon Pig before the main event-Pecha Kucha.   Our amazing line-up of speakers will make you laugh\, make you cry\, probably make you shake your fist a few times.  You do not want to miss hearing these folks discourse on what the preservation of Mississippi’s historic places means to them: \nJennifer Baughn\, Jackson \nDan Camp\, Starkvile \nSteve Holland\, Tupelo \nTom Howorth\, Oxford \nStella Gray Bryant Sykes\, Jackson \nMalcolm White\, Jackson \n Tuesday\, June 10 \nTuesday morning\, have a field day enjoying all the intriguing historic places in and around Tupelo.  Or just take some time to shop and eat a cupcake or two-supporting local\, downtown business is important preservation work! Tours include Spring Hill Missionary Baptist Church and Cemetery with the Reverend Gary Long\, Sr.\, Tupelo’s Historic Downtown (recently nominated for listing on the National Register of Historic Places) with Boyd Yarborough\, and driving tours exploring Native American History with Councilman Buddy Palmer and Civil War History with Dick Hill and New Deal History with Fred Smith. \nNext up\, celebrate Mississippi’s many preservation success stories during the Heritage Awards Luncheon at the J.J. Rogers Building.  The Mississippi Heritage Trust will honor 49 individuals\, businesses and organizations for their hard work and dedication to making sure that Mississippi’s historic places can tell their stories for generations to come.  Applause\, applause! \nYou can register for the Listen Up! SUMMARY:Strategic Planning & Financing for Small Business Owners: Lunch & Learn
DESCRIPTION:Join Michael Dollins\, CPA\, of Dollins & Associates and Timothy Dollins of SBA Lending at Regions Bank for a strategic planning and financial planning for small businesses on May 20 from 11:30 to 1:00 p.m. They will be sharing industry insight on financial planning/loans for small businesses. Lunch will be served. Don’t miss out on this helpful event for your firm!  \nSeating is limited to 25\, so RSVP to kathryn@aiabham.org by May 16.  \n  \nMichael Dollins\, CPA\nDollins & Associates \nThe Birmingham\, Alabama business market is a familiar area for Michael Dollins. Not only is he a Birmingham native and graduate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham\, Michael has worked for several locally owned businesses over the years. Michael began working at a local CPA firm before graduating and continued this trend after graduation and receiving his CPA certification. While working at local firms\, he noticed many needs of the small business owner were not being met. Most CPA’s tended to work in specific areas of accounting and tax and did not address the specific needs of the business owner. His desire to work closely with businesses and their owners would ultimately result in leaving the traditional CPA firm. In January of 2006\, Michael jumped ship and started his practice\, focusing on the needs of the small business owner and not just tax returns. His practice has grown over the years\, assisting owners with everything from financing\, cash flow management\, growth plans\, day to day operations and procedures\, to the obvious annual tax return preparation. \nTimothy Dollins\nSBA Lending\, Regions Bank \nA native of Birmingham\, Alabama\, Tim Dollins has been financing small business in central Alabama for more than 14 years. A graduate of the University of Montevallo and Troy University\, he began his career at AmSouth Bank and later worked in the community banking market where he developed a unique skill-set in Small Business Administration guaranteed lending. During the 2008 financial crisis he recognized that commercial real estate financing would be reduced as the market corrected itself and that SBA lending would become an important financing vehicle for small businesses who are often short on collateral but still in need of financing. It was during this difficult time in the banking industry that he began to utilize the SBA 7(a) lending program to meet the needs of small businesses in central Alabama. In 2013 he joined Regions Bank as the Alabama market SBA Specialist working with small businesses throughout the state of Alabama and the panhandle of Florida. As the number 1 SBA 7(a) lender in the state of Alabama\, Tim Dollins is passionate about the small businesses and communities that he serves.

SUMMARY:Mountain Brook Estates Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by Vulcan Park & Museum \nMeet in the circle near Starbucks \nFor tickets: \nhttp://www.visitvulcan.com/eventInfo/walkingtour.html\n\n$12/person or $10 Vulcan members\n\n\n\n\nMountain Brook Estates: A Vision of Community\n\n\nLeaders: Phillip Morris\, Linda Nelson \n \n\nDeveloper Robert Jemison Jr. and Boston-based landscape architect Warren Manning laid out Mountain Brook between 1926 and 1929. Their goal was to serve Birmingham homeowners who would commute between home and work by automobile. But unlike the discordant strips and subdivisions that would define post-World War II America\, Mountain Brook carefully integrates various neighborhood functions into a harmonious whole.\\n\nMountain Brook Estates: A Vision of Community will cover elements of Manning’s plan. This tour will address the early commercial buildings that still anchor Mountain Brook Village\, the loosening of architectural standards in decades following World War II and their recent re-establishment. It will end with an overview of the Lane Parke redevelopment now underway.\n

SUMMARY:Forest Park Spring Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by Vulcan Park & Museum\n \nMeet at the intersection of 42nd St. and Crescent Rd.\, street parking\n\n\n \n\n\nBe prepared for 1.5 miles walking over mostly hilly terrain.\n\n\n \n\n\nFor tickets:\n\n\nhttp://www.visitvulcan.com/eventInfo/walkingtour.html\n\n\n \n\n\n$12/person or $10 Vulcan members\n\n\n \n\n\n \n\nFOREST PARK:  AT THE FOREFRONT OF PRESERVATION\n\n \n\n\nLeaders: Catherine Browne\, Pam King\nThe story of Forest Park begins with Mountain Terrace\, the development’s first neighborhood. Developer Robert Jemison Jr. created Mountain Terrace with wealthy industrialists in mind\, enlisting some of the nation’s finest architects. It quickly caught on\, and adjacent neighborhoods soon followed to form Forest Park. Forest Park remained popular through the 1950s\, but by the 1970s\, blight and a proposed highway through Forest Park’s center threatened to undo the historic community. Volunteers rallied to place Forest Park on the National Historic Register\, a move that effectively turned the community around.\nForest Park: At the Forefront of Preservation focuses on what the neighborhood has become through the efforts of committed preservationists. Participants will get to know the Forest Park Neighborhood Association\, one of the most active such organizations in the city. They will hear how private individuals restored Triangle Park and transformed the blighted old neighborhood into one that is highly prized for its history and charm.
