SUMMARY:David Puxley: Wedgwood’s First Studio Potter Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Host / Birmingham Museum of Art \nVenue / Birmingham Museum of Art – Directions \nFrom the late eighteenth century when Josiah Wedgwood utilized the designs of artists like John Flaxman and Lady Elizabeth Templetown for many of his jasperware designs\, the Wedgwood company has established a firm tradition of employing the best and the brightest. In 1964\, the firm continued this tradition by inviting a young potter named David Puxley to serve as its first studio potter in residence. David was given a spot at the factory and access to all materials and personnel—and then he was just told to create! While many of his designs went into production\, others were sold at special exhibitions and through private channels. \nThe BMA’s Buten Wedgwood Collection includes more than 150 objects made by David Puxley during his tenure at the factory—the largest assemblage of Puxley’s work in the world. Drawn from the permanent collection\, the exhibition explores the notion of “studio pottery” during the second half of the twentieth century and highlights Puxley’s creative work and his role in establishing a studio pottery tradition at Wedgwood. \nDavid Puxley: Wedgwood’s First Studio Potter is sponsored by the Jefferson County Commission. Additional support provided by the City of Birmingham and grants from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

We’ll then look at how these activities can be supported with an optimal arrangement of settings that contain the right mix of surroundings\, tools\, and furnishings. The approach is descriptive rather than prescriptive. Attendees will be able to link research insights with design strategies to provide solutions that answer the unique needs of each organization and its people. \nMary Kathryn German Bio\nAs the A&D Market Manager and Living Office Specialist for Herman Miller\, Mary Kathryn is responsible for consulting on workplace applications\, trends\, solutions and services. SUMMARY:20% of the Fee and 80% of the Liability: Navigating the Minefield of Construction Contract Administration
DESCRIPTION:20% of the Fee and 80% of the Liability: Navigating the Minefield of Construction Contract Administration\nand\nEvaluating Professional Ethics & Conduct Through Case Studies\nSpeaker — Barbara Sable\, RLI Insurance Company\nWednesday\, October 28\n2-5 pm\, registration at 1:30 pm\nVestavia Country Club\nFREE\nSnacks will be available.\nRSVP to Cassie Hall\, 205-397-5133 or chall@jrprewitt.com\n  \nParticipants in this seminar will learn or better understand: \nThe typical design professional fee is split 80% for the design and construction document creation and 20% for construction contract administration services. While construction contract administration is an essential service offered by design professionals\, most claims against design professionals now include an allegation relating to negligence in the construction contract administration services. Owners increasingly expect design professionals to protect them from improper performance of the contractor\, or to take risks related to design changes and substitutions intended to modify project cost. This course will explore the risks that design professionals face when providing construction contract administration services. We will identify the sources of these risks and learn how design professionals can mitigate them without compromising public health\, safety and welfare. \n
