SUMMARY:The Impact Glare from Lighting has on User Health and Satisfaction by Lighting Solutions (Platinum Sponsor) (HSW)
DESCRIPTION:Register here!\n7/8 // 1-2 PM // 1 HSW\nOne of the most important and least explored phases of lighting design is that complex and indefinite one which is known as glare. (M. Luckiesh and L.L Holiday; 1925). Proper lighting design\, architectural lighting and glare mitigation are often hard to combine\, particularly when a certain appearance is desired\, but the fixture selected is not conducive to the space because of glare. VCP\, UGR\, Intensity or Luminance values on their specification sheet? \nHow do we balance glare mitigation or create a healthy space while meeting the architectural design intent? \nThis presentation will teach the designer how to read and understand these values and terms all while creating a healthy space. Lighting Design can add to the architectural value and safety of a building or an environment. Glare from a lighting fixture can result in discomfort or in some cases pain and inability to navigate a space. \nIt is important to understand the terms and information available to the design community when comparing fixture specifications and determining the best fixture for an application that will mitigate glare and provide safe illumination for the user of the building. \nPresented by Lighting Solutions (Platinum Sponsor)

SUMMARY:Principals of UV and its use as a Germicidal by Lighting Solutions (Platinum Sponsor) (HSW)
DESCRIPTION:Click here to register online!\nThe COVID-19 global pandemic is having an enormous impact on almost every aspect of our lives. The rapid and easy spread of this virus has created a substantial amount of interest in the germicidal properties of ultra violet and the possibility of using this spectrum to disinfect various applications. This presentation will cover the three types of ultra violet and levels of germicidal properties and capabilities. The history of the use of various lamp sources which can deliver UV will be explored as well as the risks associated with the various types. UVC will be specifically discussed as a germicidal\, including how it can be used in various applications such as water\, air cleaning and sanitizing items and surfaces\, as well as “inactivates” COVID –19 (SARS-CoV-2). \nPresented by Lighting Solutions (Platinum Sponsor)

SUMMARY:LM's and TMs and Standards - Oh my! by Lighting Solutions (Platinum Sponsor) (HSW)
DESCRIPTION:Click here to register online!\nToday’s lighting world is full of abbreviations and “TLAs” (Three Letter Acronyms) … heck\, even LED (Light Emitting\nDiode) is a TLA! This presentation will help you sort out that Alphabet Soup and determine which of these are relevant for\nyour particular projects. We will discuss the most common LED product listing bodies\, DLC (Design Lights Consortium)\nand Energy Star\, and clarify how these may impact your specifications. \nWe’ll also go through the basics of today’s IES\n(Illuminating Engineering Society) TM (Technical Memoranda) and LM (Lighting Measurement) publications for LEDs.\nAnd finally\, we will touch on TM-30\, the new publication for Evaluating Light Source Color Rendition\, and how that\ncompares to traditional CRI (Color Rendering Index). \nAnd at the end of it all you will have learned your ABC’s of today’s LED world. Codes and standards are written to promote safety of the public in buildings. Standards for lighting are written by the Illuminating Engineering Society and when met these standards assure quality of fixtures. Product listing bodies such as Energy Star and DLC\nrequire minimal. \nPresented by Lighting Solutions (Platinum Sponsor)

SUMMARY:CEU: Improve Energy Efficiency with Addressable Lighting Controls by Lighting Solutions (Platinum Sponsor) (HSW)
DESCRIPTION:Click here to register online!\nMonday\, June 1\, 2020 // 12-1 PM CT\nThis AIA certified course explores the ways in which an addressable lighting control system and a digital addressable lighting interface (DALI) system can improve the overall energy efficiency of a lighting system. People living and working in building environments report higher ratings of lighting quality\, overall environmental satisfaction\, and self-rated productivity. People with dimming control showed more sustained motivation\, and improved performance on a measure of attention. \nThe differences between designing and wiring traditional relay or 0-10V lighting control systems and addressable lighting control systems will be reviewed. Controls systems are required by code systems today and control not only the lights but the shades\, building systems and data for usage. This in turn allows for greater energy savings/ energy management\, better usage of spaces within the built environment and higher user satisfaction of the lighting as well as the environment itself. \nPresented by Lighting Solutions (Platinum Sponsor)

There is a large interest in understanding the motivation and main drivers of shoppers. However latest neuro science studies show that 90% our decisions as humans are based on emotions\, these emotion driven decisions are also driving the buying decisions at point of sale. As lighting experts\, we understand that light impacts on people’s mood\, emotion and therefore wellbeing – both in a positive and negative ways .However we realized that lighting and emotion has never been researched in the shop and retail environment from a consumer perspective until now. The results of the limbic lighting study show that lighting is closely related to the wellbeing of the customers and therefore dwell times and individual spending significantly\, in fact 10% if applied in the right way. Limbic lighting is not connected to specific lighting technology\, it is more deeply linked to a better and profound understanding of the shopper and their behavior. This study and course allows architects and interior designers to understand the consumers side of lighting better and enhance shop design according to the needs of the customer target groups \nCourse Format: Instructor-led face-to-face \nNumber of Course Learning Units: 1 \nCredit Designations: LU \nLearning Objective 1: Understand what drives buying decisions of shoppers in a \nretail environment and what this could be used to the advantage of your customers. Learn how Gerry Weber increased sales in a shop by 10% with Limbic Lighting. \nLearning Objective 2: Learn about three different shopper types and the lighting \ndesigns which attract them most. \nLearning Objective 3: Learn about neuroscience and how we are affected as \nhumans unconsciously by built environment and design. \nLearning Objective 4: Know about the right approach and the right tools to apply \ntarget group specific lighting

SUMMARY:Sponsor Luncheon: YANMAR America / Utilizing Natural Gas to Increase Sustainability (1 HSW)
DESCRIPTION:Presenting: Utilizing Natural Gas to Increase Sustainability (1 HSW)\nFriday\, April 21 \n11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.\nAlabama Center for Architecture (109 R. Arrington Jr Blvd South)\nFree (lunch included)\nRSVP required to kathryn@aiabham.org — Seating is limited!\nAIA Members ONLY. No sponsors or guests.  \nMix and mingle with one of our newest platinum sponsors\, Yanmar America! The presentation will cover the benefits of natural gas as a fuel source specifically in relation to VRF and combined heat and power systems\, which can be installed in many building applications to increase sustainability. \n  \nMore about YANMAR America\nSince 1912\, YANMAR has been leading the way in the innovation of premium diesel engine products\, all engineered and manufactured by YANMAR. Our founder\, Magokichi Yamaoka’s diesel engine innovation in 1933 was the world’s first commercially viable small diesel engine\, which he designed to ease the work load of the Japanese farmer. By continually focusing on engineering\, YANMAR is able to deliver products that exceed customer expectations and deliver exceptional lifetime value; these include industrial and marine diesel engines\, generators\, pumps\, utility task vehicles\, agricultural equipment\, compact construction equipment\, net cleaning robots\, natural gas VRF systems\, CHP systems and more. \nYANMAR America Energy Systems is the North\, Central and South American headquarters for the company’s Variable Refrigerant Flow and Combined Heat and Power systems. Our team and products are focused on three main things: sustainability\, reliability and efficiency. \nYANMAR’s Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) heat pumps use natural gas and reversible air-source technology to deliver heating and cooling at low operating costs to commercial buildings. Users can create zoned comfort depending on the needs of the buildings with configuration options for 2 to 29 zones on one piping network\, and with heat recovery\, buildings can be heated and cooled in different zones at the same time. Benefits include a reduction in overall operating costs by 30 to 70 percent depending on local utilities\, a reduction in electricity usage by up to 90\, a reduction in harmful emissions and lowered system lifecycle costs. \nYANMAR’s Combined Heat and Power (CHP) systems use natural gas or propane to generate both useful heat and electricity for your building. Unlike centralized power plants\, YANMAR’s CHP systems recover energy to provide heat to the building while also eliminating the distribution loss that happens over power lines. The optional Blackout Start ensures that the unit continues to produce heat and power even when the grid fails. Benefits include a 33% or greater increase in efficiency compared with conventional generation\, a carbon footprint reduction by up to 50% and significant cost savings by switching to natural gas or propane. \nIf you’re interested in learning more about our products\, please contact our local representative who will be happy to schedule an introductory meeting at your office with your team. \n  \nContact: \nYANMAR America \nLuke McHugh \nBusiness Development Manager – Alabama & West Tennessee \n678-800-9349 \nluke_mchugh@yanmar.com \nwww.yanmar-es.com \n  \n
