AIA Birmingham: Newsletter masthead

!

“Architects don’t play well together!  I don’t like hanging out with architects.” This is what I have been hearing since April 2005 when you guys hired me.  I believed it for a long time, but not anymore. Many of you say you do not attend chapter meetings or other AIA functions because you do not like hanging out with other architects.  I do not believe you!  You say one thing, but your actions say something else.  Let me explain…AIA has held two art openings featuring architects and you supported each opening.  When architects leave a firm and open their own firm, you share their excitement and congratulate them. You even send them work if a client/job does not fit in with your firm’s scope of work.  This happens all the time.  When you do attend an AIA meeting, you see someone you went to architecture school and talk about then and now.  You have so much in common with other architects; attended the same college, same grueling course load, difficult clients, great clients, trying to get contractors to build your projects like you designed them, trying to balance family and a firm, bad economy, not paid nearly enough, trying to stay on top of new products, codes changing all the time, keeping your license updated in all the states you work, NCARB, continuing education hours and reporting them, LEED,  keeping up with your AIA membership and trying to attend enough AIA meetings that Rhea will not keep calling and emailing you.
Your actions speak louder than your words.

Peace,
Rhea Williams
Executive Director

“Networking Benefits Everyone”
Dictionary.Com defines networking as “a supportive system of sharing information and services among individuals and groups having a common interest.” However, sometimes the benefits of networking are not always apparent.  So that raises the question, how does it benefit you, the architect, to network with your local product reps?  The greatest thing to remember when meeting these representatives is that networking is all about building relationships.  Your local reps do not just want your business because it’s additional revenue; they understand the amount of effort it takes to design your projects and have them built in a manner that reflects not only your specifications but your ideas that went into the design process.  When your local representatives sponsor AIA, they are sponsoring you and are showing their appreciation for your work.  When AIA holds such functions as the Sponsor Appreciation Trade Show, the Golf Tournament, art openings and monthly chapter meetings, we are helping you and your sponsors build a support system.  These are not only ways for sponsors to “get their foot in the door” but also ways for you to build relationships with them.  As your relationship with them grows, they can become resources for you when questions arise during the design and construction phases of your projects.

Architect + ART

Thank you Joey Longoria, Adrienne Retief and David Scheirer for sharing your art with us. Everyone enjoyed the diversity of the three artists. Each artist/architect had a different style to their work. It is great to see members work on display and in the AIA office too! Thanks again to G & L Marble for sponsoring the opening. If you missed the opening, the art will be on exhibit until the end of the month.

The “Six-Month Rule”
Washington, DC—In June, the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards’ (NCARB) Member Boards passed a rule requiring interns to submit their training units in reporting periods of no longer than six months. The “Six-Month Rule,” as it has been nicknamed, will go into effect on 1 July 2009 for interns who begin an NCARB
Record on or after that date and 1 July 2010 for all interns regardless of application date. All training unit reports must be submitted electronically and within two months of completion of each reporting period.
Things Supervisors and Interns Should Know:
The “Six-Month Rule” is designed to improve both the accuracy of reporting and the overall IDP experience. The IDP Guidelines have long recommended that interns submit reports to NCARB every four months. Under the new rule, interns will be required to report training units earned in intervals of no more than six months. However, they can submit reports more often if they wish.

  • Regular reporting will provide an opportunity for interns and supervisors to review progress made over reporting periods and develop a plan for acquiring training in the remaining areas. This benefit should help prevent interns from being surprised by falling short of required training units as they near the end of their internship. Supervisors will also be more familiar with the work documented and therefore would be more likely to approve training reports.
  • Implementation of the “Six-Month Rule” is dependent on an online reporting system. The electronic Experience Verification Reporting system (e-EVR) will be available by the end of December, but the “Six-Month Rule” will not go into effect until at least six months after the online reporting system is launched. Should the new system not be fully tested and operational by 31 December 2008, each implementation date will be pushed back and will go into effect six months after the system is operational.
  • Once interns have submitted their training units by entering them into their Record online, those units are protected while any loose ends are tied up. Interns will not be affected by any delay caused by their supervisor or NCARB. However, submitted training units can be lost if they are deemed invalid by their supervisor, or if they are not earned in accordance with the rules of IDP.
  • The “Six-Month Rule” allows parents of newborn infants or newly adopted children to receive a six month extension of the reporting deadline upon proper application. Extensions for active military service and serious medical conditions are also available.

Architecture as Art

Please join us for the Opening Reception of “Architecture as Art” November 2, 2008 4-6 p.m. The fascinating exhibition includes sketches, elevations, and full-size detail drawings from the practice of Birmingham architect D. O.Whilldin, who designed many of the most notable and well-loved buildingsin the city. The drawings, representing a fraction of this prolific artist’s work, provide insight into the workings of an architectural practice rooted in the Beaux-Arts tradition. They also reveal the artistic skills that practitioners of this pre-computer era called on in producing works of lasting beauty and functionality.
