Just a Thought…
It has occurred to me the architectural profession is one large group effort. It may sound as if I am stating the obvious, but really take a minute to think about this. When one hurts, we all hurt. When one gains, we all gain. We should continue helping each other in good times and bad because what benefits one person or firm benefits the whole profession. Let us know how we can help benefit the profession. E-mail aiabirm@aiabham.org or danya@aiabham.org.

Green Kitchens and Chocolate!
What a fun meeting! European Kitchens of Alabama did a great job hosting our meeting. Members were able to spend time in the showroom, meet representatives, earn 1SDU, network, win door prizes, given a goody bag from Birmingham Home & Gardens and then members had chocolates and espresso!
We cannot spoil you that way every month, but we will be happy to try!

dreamArchitecture JURY
dreamArchitecure hit a new record this year, 29 participating schools and 919 submissions. We usually have closer to 1500 submissions, but several of the schools prejudged. We really want every submission. Our jury this year was Ty Cole- GA Studio, Dr. Raphael McDaniel – Jefferson County Board of Education, Rashid Quandil, Birmingham Museum of Art, Mark Stith –Portico Magazine and Fred Yeager, AIA Birmingham President. The jury had the hardest job trying to determine the winners. The entries were amazing and full of LIFE – COLOR – IMAGINATION – CREATIVE DESIGNS and it appears every school needs ice cream and animals. (see more photos here)
Please do not miss the awards ceremony for the students,

Dear AIA Member,
High school students and especially recent graduates possess amazing potential and have seemingly endless possibilities in store for their future. Which direction should they choose? Since spring 2005, the ACE Mentor Program of Alabama has exposed more than 75 local students to opportunities in Architecture, Construction, Engineering, and related fields. Many of those students are pursuing 4 year degrees thanks to the encouragement of ACE mentors and scholarships provided from industry leading firms like yours. This year we have a record number of seniors and they need your support more than ever!

The 2008-09 class of ACE students and mentors shown above have committed more than 60 total hours per person equaling almost 3000 hours collectively as a group! Through hands on design projects, construction site visits, building competitions and other learning activities, they have gained an understanding and appreciation for our industry – but we don’t want their learning to stop now! Please support the future of these promising students and the future of our industry by supporting the ACE Alabama Graduation Dinner scheduled for May 19, 2009. All sponsorships directly fund scholarships for these students who are currently interested in pursuing careers in architecture, construction, engineering, interior design, and landscape architecture – thanks to the ACE program.
ACE students will be showcasing the work they have done throughout the year at the graduation dinner. Their proud families, mentors and many industry leaders will be present to join in the celebration. Besides the obvious investment you will be making in the future of several deserving students, the annual ACE Alabama Graduation Dinner is an opportunity to network with other industry leaders and gain valuable public relations visibility by aligning your company with a very worthy cause. The mentors and students of ACE look forward to seeing you on May 19, 2009 at the McWayne Center to celebarate!
Thanks for your consideration,
Rhea Williams
