The Smorgasbord by Danya Humaideh
Damascus, Syria
In November 2009, I had the opportunity to visit my family and friends in Damascus, Syria. This was my first visit in four years. I never understood how truly special Syria is as a child visiting every year with my parents. I took the culture for granted because it was very different from the American culture in which I was raised. This visit was an eye-opening experience. I finally felt what it was like to get back in touch with my roots and gain a whole new respect for the culture.
I spent two and a half weeks in Damascus visiting my family and touring the history-rich city. It was an awesome trip and I definitely hope to return to learn more about my family’s culture. Here are just a few photos from the trip. Click here. I hope you enjoy!
Thank you KMAC and Block USA
We can count on a crowd when Block USA does their annual Fish Fry for us and if you add a really cool venue like KMAC – GUARANTEED CROWD! Thanks to KMAC for hosting our November 2009 meeting. It is great to know architects have a resource like KMAC in our own back yard. LEED points available.

AIA Holiday TOPPER Party
Thank you EDT Engineering for hosting the AIA Birmingham Holiday Topper Party.
Everyone loved the venue and the decorations were beautiful. The hats were fun and so many of you got creative. An architect angel even made an appearance along with an Auburn Santa, a light up tree and lots of cowboys (who knew?).
Katrina Trotter took some professional photos for us, click here to view.
Thank you Katrina.
Danya and I took some not so professional photos, click here to view.

ARCHITECTS RULE!
Thank you AIA members for stepping up for the ACE Mentor Program. ACE Mentor of AL held its first annual CEO Briefing at the Summit Club (click here), December 4th, 2009. Architects took the lead in attending the breakfast and sponsoring the bird houses.
ACE students were given a client at the first ACE meeting. Their clients are native birds and students were given their habitat information and preferred feeding areas. Students are now in the design phase and will begin construction in the spring. The bird houses will be given to the sponsors at the May awards banquet. Thanks to everyone who attended the breakfast and sponsored a bird house.
