American Institute of Architects, Birmingham, Alabama Chapter logo

Hello AIA Members!
I don’t know about you guys, but I am tired of Alabama getting no recognition for GOOD DESIGN.  We have a lot of very talented architects in our state, yet you guys do not receive the recognition you deserve.  This affects you in many ways, from hiring new architects/interns to bidding on projects to the overall reputation of the ALABAMA Architectural Profession.  AIA Birmingham will be taking steps toward a more positive image of architecture in our area.  We will keep the membership informed, and with time, you will see a difference.

I want to thank all of you for supporting AIA Birmingham and making this such a strong AIA chapter.

Peace,
Rhea Williams
Executive Director

August 19th: Green Chapter Meeting
The August chapter meeting will be held from 11:30 – 1:30.  The lunch presentation will be presented by Brian Rountree on tankless water heaters. HB Brantley will give a short overview of the BJCC Qualifications.  "In support of the its expansion efforts, the BJCC is in the process of taking statement of qualifications from architectural firms with at least ten years experience in designing long span, large assembly multi-purpose facilities. It is anticipated that this process will be completed by mid-to-late September 2008. The Design Architect will not be selected until the site assessment activity currently being facilitated by the Birmingham Business Leadership Group is completed in early September 2008. Upon selection of the Design Architect, the BJCC will then embark upon a separate, but similar, process to identify local architectural interest. It is the intent of the BJCC to fully engage the local architectural community to assist in its expansion efforts."

AIA Birmingham’s First Art Opening
60 – 65 people attended the AIA’s first ART opening sponsored by HOAR Construction. Van Roberson was our first artist to hold an opening at the AIA office and sold several paintings. It was great to see our chapter supporting the arts. For more information on Van, please visit his website, www.MagicCity.Etsy.com. click here for more photos of the art opening.

Reusable Grocery Bag, AIA

Smorgasbord by Danya Humaideh
5 Fun Things to Do With Your AIA Reusable Bag

5.  Go shopping – The bag is big enough to hold 2 large shoe boxes, 10 pairs of folded pants, 15 folded shirts, or enough food to fill the refrigerator of a single person.
4.  Pick your garden – Eliminate using plastic buckets.  You could fill your bag full of green beans, squash, cucumbers and tomatoes picked fresh from your garden (or your friends’).
3.  Take your kids Trick-or-Treating – Imagine how much candy you could get in there!
2.  Go bowling – Your AIA bag is sturdy enough to carry a bowling ball, bowling shoes, and (for you hardcore bowlers) gloves and a towel.
1.  Go on a picnic – It’s summer – pack a bag (AIA bag that is) and a friend and visit one of your local parks! Your AIA bag could fit a blanket to sit on, a bottle of wine, a loaf of bread, some fruits and veggies, and a small cooler to keep your perishables cold.

Birmingham Architectural Foundation Awards
$5000 in SCHOLARSHIPS
This is the second year the B.A.F has awarded scholarships to students who are or will be attending accredited schools of architecture.  In 2007 we awarded $2000 to two students.
This year we were able to award $5000 in scholarships to three students.
The winners are:
John Thompson, a junior at Auburn University received a $1000 scholarship,
John Habshey, a sophomore at Auburn University received a $1500 scholarship and
Yesufu O’lapido, a sophomore at Auburn University received a scholarship for $2500!  Yesufu was a 2007 scholarship winner and has excelled in his academics.

The Birmingham Architectural Foundation scholarship program encourages past participants/winners to apply again.  It is the Foundations goal to continue supporting students who are pursuing a career in architecture.
Remember your donations to the Birmingham Architectural Foundation are 100% tax deductible.

We would like to recognize and thank the American Institute of Architects Scholarship Program. AIA Birmingham was awarded a matching scholarship through National AIA. www.birminghamarchitecturalfoundation.org

Fellows – We need More from ALABAMA
FRIDAY, AUGUST 22nd, in New Orleans.
Gulf States has planned a fellows workshop so our region can have more members applying for fellowship.  There are so many of you who have taken leadership roles, serve on city councils and have done so much for the architectural profession – we need you to start thinking early about your architecture career.  If you start planning now to apply for fellow, it will make your application process much easier.
Many of you heard Allen Eskew, FAIA, speak during our time together at the GS Reception in Boston about encouraging more Gulf States members to apply for Fellowship.  Lee Askew, FAIA, has just completed three years' service on the Fellows Jury and has agreed to share his knowledge along with Allen. Nicole Marshall, Development Director with Eskew+Dumez+Ripple, is working with Allen and Lee to present a dynamic, one-day, hands-on workshop on attaining Fellowship status.

Jim Eley, FAIA, and Trula Remson, AIA, your regional directors for Gulf States, polled the leadership about using some of our reserve funds for this program, and it was enthusiastically applauded.  Since you, as leaders for your state/region, are in the best position to identify and encourage members to apply, we are asking you to help get the word out to members who might be interested in this workshop.

Who Should Attend?
Anyone currently applying for fellowship - this will be hands-on, so bring your application for review
Anyone thinking of applying in the next couple of years
State component executive to learn and be ready to work with your members
One leader per state who would take on the role of "mentor" for at least one year with your own peers

The Good News
AIA Gulf States will provide breakfast and lunch FREE to attendees
The workshop is FREE to all
AIA Gulf States is negotiating a $99 room rate at a primo hotel in the heart of the French Quarter; room rate would be good for Friday night also

Hotel Information
