Hello AIA Members!
Yes, I am telling this story again. I told this story at the Green Building Focus Conference (I was co-emcee, representing AIA). My Mother at age 70 started recycling and like anything else she does – it is all or nothing. She recycles everything now. She has to drive 30 miles to the Alabama Environmental Council Recycling Center (downtown). So I do not want to hear any reasons on why it is inconvenient for you to recycle or CHANGE.
Change is as hard as we make it. Birmingham has changed since the 1960’s and it can change again to an environmentally friendly city welcoming new “Green Supply Businesses”.
Architects are the leaders in this change.
Peace,
Rhea Williams,
Executive Director

Summit Club Chapter Meeting
Thank you to Kahn for hosting our July chapter meeting at the Summit Club. There were 95 people attending the meeting. The presentation on Albert Kahn was great. It is wonderful to see architects and architecture celebrated. The Kahn exhibit was well attended at LITE Box Gallery at Pepper Place. We need to have more exhibits recognizing architects and their great works to promote the profession.

Scholarships Awarded - Birmingham Architectural Foundation
The Birmingham Architectural Foundation awarded three scholarships at the AIA July Chapter Meeting. Despite difficult economic times, the B.A.F still managed to award $4000 in scholarships, thanks to the AIA 2008 Golf Tournament.
Trevor Matchett, President of B.A.F announced the scholarship winners;
Shelby Beddingfield, Antonio Minifield and Yesufu O’ladipo.
Shelby Beddingfield was awarded $500. She will be attending Auburn University in the Fall. Antonio Minifield was awarded $1,000. He participated in the ACE Mentoring Program and will be attending Tuskegee University in the Fall. Antonio was also warded a National ACE scholarship. Yesufu O’ladipo has become the poster student for B.A.F.
He applied for the B.A.F scholarship the first year, 2006. He has applied each year and has been awarded each year. We have watched him grow as a student and architect. Yesufu also participated in the ACE Mentor program and won the National ACE scholarship in 2006. He has interned at GA Studio and is now interning at NHB Group. He will be participating in the Auburn Urban Studio with Professor Cheryl Morgan.
Yesufu was awarded a $2,500 scholarship to Auburn University.
The B.A.F board would like to thank everyone who made these scholarships possible, including National AIA matching scholarship program.

They began their tour at Studio 212, 2nd Row- Erdreich Architects, Urban Standard, heaviest corner, KPS and on to Morris Ave. for lemonade at the AIA lemonade stand. Then Kris Nikolich and Marshall Anderson (Design Initiative) gave tours of their office. AIA Birmingham members are always giving back to the community. Click here for photo gallery

Back in Time Golf Prices!!!!
AIA Birmingham realizes times are tough and money is tight. We have gone back in time to the year 2000 golf pricing. AIA feels your financial pain and has decided to take action. We understand companies are trimming expenses, but we still need to help our two non- profit organizations, Birmingham Architectural Foundation and Pathways. Our charity organizations are feeling the economic crisis and we have to continue our support. Make plans now to sponsor or play in the best, largest golf tournament in Birmingham!!
Look at these great prices!!

“Underemployed” Architect Sponsored Luncheons
Due to the economy, AIA has their share of “underemployed” architects. We have discussed with several of our sponsors having them sponsor a lunch for the underemployed. During these luncheons we will provide seminars on resume tips, presentation skills and Revit and BIM classes. We hope to have a luncheon scheduled by September.
If you have other suggestions for the underemployed, please contact the AIA office.

HEALTH CARE PLAN SUBMISSION RULES AMENDED
The Alabama State Board of Health has approved recent amendments to rule Chapter 420-5-22, "Submission of Plans and Specifications for Health Care Facilities." The amended rules for plan submission were effective on July 31 and are posted on the Alabama Department of Public Health web site. Included in the changes are the adoption of the 2006 Edition of the International Building Code and the 2006 Edition of the Guidelines for Design and Construction of Hospital and Health Care Facilities ("AIA Guidelines").
For newly established facilities that are not yet licensed, a new Pre-licensure Application must now be submitted to Public Health prior to the department's review of preliminary plan submissions. For more information, go to www.adph.org/facmgmt, then select "Plan Review" on the left menu bar.
