FOREST PARK:  AT THE FOREFRONT OF PRESERVATION

Leaders: Catherine Browne, Pam King
The story of Forest Park begins with Mountain Terrace, the development’s first neighborhood. Developer Robert Jemison Jr. created Mountain Terrace with wealthy industrialists in mind, enlisting some of the nation’s finest architects. It quickly caught on, and adjacent neighborhoods soon followed to form Forest Park. Forest Park remained popular through the 1950s, but by the 1970s, blight and a proposed highway through Forest Park’s center threatened to undo the historic community. Volunteers rallied to place Forest Park on the National Historic Register, a move that effectively turned the community around.
Forest Park: At the Forefront of Preservation focuses on what the neighborhood has become through the efforts of committed preservationists. Participants will get to know the Forest Park Neighborhood Association, one of the most active such organizations in the city. They will hear how private individuals restored Triangle Park and transformed the blighted old neighborhood into one that is highly prized for its history and charm.
